Re: Getting a new Hamster
Yay Ruby! That's such great news. Fingers crossed all the baby hammies are healthy.
I've been thinking about getting another ham but, like yourself living in Scotland there isn't many breeders.
I can bet you're having plenty of fun setting up the detolf.

Re: Getting a new Hamster
I think where Ruby lives there aren't even any private ads! (Gumtree etc) Or small animal rescues. Hamsters hard to find I think so Pets at Home is probably the only pet shop that has them in the region
Can't wait to meet your new baby - I am sure it will love the detolf.

Re: Getting a new Hamster
That's great news Ruby, will look forward to hearing all about your new floof when he picks you out Being in Scotland also I understand how hard it is finding a breeder. We spent a long time trying to find a breeder and had no success. In the end we got our first 2 from an independent pet shop. Third was from P@H and the fourth was a rescue. Regardless of where they started life they all need a home and love and I'm your new little boy will be very lucky to have you

Re: Getting a new Hamster
I think you're doing right. My only possibility here is buying them from a pet shop or trying to find someone that wants to rehome an unwanted litter (which may sound easy but it's not) so under that kind of circumstances it's not that you can choose what you want to do. Going for a little one is a good idea, that way should be easier to tame, shouldn't it?.

Re: Getting a new Hamster
Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I think I'm just really nervous. I keep second guessing myself. I know every hamster is different so I can't go in with preconceptions. Spike was pretty much half tame when I got him so I'm a little worried about the taming process too.

Re: Getting a new Hamster
I think it's natural to be a bit nervous Ruby but I'm sure things will be fine once you get your man home, just having time to over think things doesn't help but not long till Friday now!
They're all so different & individual, just take your time & enjoy

Re: Getting a new Hamster
Aww Ruby, congratulations! I know deep down this was your preferred choice and I'm so glad the breeder contacted you. You've now got almost a month to get the detolf ready for your little boy.

Re: Getting a new Hamster
I'm so excited - I can't believe it! I was looking for such a long time. I took the suggestion from a co-worker to try a facebook group (I'm not really much for Facebook). I ended up posting on a few different groups not thinking much would come of it. But I spotted a breeder advertising who is out in West Lothian and decided to take a chance. We chatted a bit and she has agreed to meet me in Edinburgh with the hammy and I'll cover the extra cost . Edinburgh is easy enough for me to get too, it's a 2.5 hour train ride but I think that's doable. I have to send her pictures of my setup too .
Downside is that I am going to have to trust her in picking the hamster, although she'll send me photos that doesn't tell you about the hamster's personality. I don't care too much about appearance but personality is important - I think by the time they are ready to go she should have a good idea of each hamster's character. Also it is going to cost me to travel down to Edinburgh so he's going to turn out to be a rather expensive hammy - but I don't mind . Dad is white banded with brown and Mom is cream/white. I think she's going for improving her banded line. I'm guessing baby will take after one or the other, although I suppose genetics could throw out an oddball.
Now I have to dail down my exictement and go to work!
