How did I miss this thread?!

Ok top five buys - assuming you mean toys, so not including cage, wheel or substrate.

1) Rat sputnik - they're a good size for a Syrian and make a nice hanging den if you put some substrate in and hang them next to a shelf. From Amazon, Zooplus or rat rations (you can choose the top and bottom colour at rat rations).

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nobby-Sputn...ds=Rat+sputnik

2) Hyacinth tunnel. I absolutely love these, best tubes/tunnels I've had. I had two - one in the cage and one for out of cage time. They are soft woven hyacinth, chewable and hams seem tempted to chew them, and have two holes in the side for weaving in and out of so it's fun. You can also tie them to cage bars easily with cable ties if you want it in a particular position, but mainly good as a floor toy.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Small-Ani...yacinth+tunnel

3) Potty. This one is a good size and fits in a corner. Easy for the hamster to get in and out of and easy for the human to empty and clean out. You put chinchilla bathing sand in it and it can double up as a sand bath until you find out if your hammy likes sand baths or not.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Houses-Ha...=hamster+potty

4) Savic rat tube - this is a gorgeous big clear blue tube and quite long. Comes with chains which aren't safe to have hanging. I tied mine on the roof of the cage with sisal string (cable ties might do it) between a shelf and the sputnik. Or you can tie it to side bars. From Amazon or Zooplus

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Savic-Giant...Savic+rat+tube

5) Granite topped house from Rodipet I had a different house and bought the piece of granite separately, but the granite topped houses do two things. They are great houses, with areas for nesting, hoarding and peeing and you can put a potty inside. And the rough granite roof part helps keep their nails short, so putting the food bowl on it is good for regular nail shortening

I have to have 7 really because as others have said, bendy stick bridges are essential for tunnels, ramps etc. So

6) Bendy stick bridge

and

7) Rainbow bridge. This is a lovely little toy. Too small for a Syrian to go underneath and useless as a ramp up to anything but ours liked just running over the top of it or sitting on it

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rosewood-Bo...Rainbow+Bridge

The first 6 are practical, useful, good for a Syrian Hamster and easy to clean (except maybe the Hyacinth tunnel) or disinfect if ever needed. The house is easy to clean if you paint it with plastikote paint.

The 7th one is fun - the children would like it too.

I've been having a look for UK equivalents to the Gerber Puffs - does this look broadly similar? It's literally just rice that has been puffed, with no added sugar, sold as a human breakfast cereal Kallo Organic Natural Puffed Rice Cereal | Holland & Barrett - the UK’s Leading Health Retailer

They're not similar except for the puffed grain part, but these could still work as a treat for any species!

With my Syrians they've loved to climb so lots of hanging toys

- Sputnik, my last Syrian used it as a sand bath, my new one likes to spend time in it

- Small 'n' Furry Climb 'n' ladder with hammock, he loves it, he's still a baby so can't quite reach between the rungs on the ladder but he should be able to soon as he's only 8 weeks

- knobly gnawers from pets at home, they don't chew them but i line them up to make a platform

- Alaska cage from zoo plus! Cheap, easy to move, a good size and very easy to clean

- Some might not agree but the Savic Roly wheel, it's 11/12 inches, quiet (if you oil the spindle every now and then, I've only had to do it 2 or 3 times) and has lasted for 5 years! (my previous Hamster ran a LOT!)

They sound great too Although the climbing ladder with the hammock isn't safe. Anything with rungs is a bit dangerous for hammies and the fabric of the hammock can be chewed and them get threads round their legs and teeth. Obviously you know your hamster and can keep an eye on things but there have been accidents with those climbing ladders with hammocks. I took mine out when I saw our hamster jump off it and catch his leg. There are stories of hamsters hanging by a broken leg! From the chains usually.

Sorry to put a damper on that! My experience is they only climb to see if they can get to the top and escape! And are basically ground dwellers, but they do like different levels so a platform or shelf is better - the sputniks are great too - I had a long rat tube tied to the roof leading from the sputnik to the shelf on the other side which gave a whole second level without any falls or legs getting caught

Ooh! I didn't know that! Thank you! I did wonder about chewing the fabric but he's leaving that alone at the moment, however I have removed it, it's not worth the risk!

He seems to like being up high strangely!
