Re: Should I get a hamster?
Aah l see what you mean.
Well I want to be a good carer for my hamster ofcourse. If he/she is uncomfortable in the cage I would definitely get/make a bigger one. I do have a nice area to set the cage up in my studio.
TBH after all the reading I've done taking care of a hamster actually does seem very complicated. I hope I can figure everything out so that I can do the best job possible.
Thanks everyone for your reactions!

Re: Should I get a hamster?
I hope you do end up getting a ham! The learning process is a rocky road filled with mistakes and heartbreak, but it's totally worth it, trust me! I never had a ham for the longest time but as soon as I got one, I regretted not getting one sooner! Hope all works out and you can welcome a new little friend into your home

I reckon that if your friend is absolutely and totally trustworthy, then it should be OK to leave your hamster at home on weekends but with someone coming in daily to change the water bottle and top up the food bowl (and maybe play with the hamster also, if they have time).
When I travelled down to Devon for a family wedding last November and was away from home for three nights I paid for a pet sitter to come to my home once a day to see to my caged menagerie, changing water containers and topping up food bowls. I have budgies and guinea pigs as well as my hamster and as it was my daughter's wedding I just had to include pet sitting as part of the cost of going to the wedding.

Re: Should I get a hamster?
If you're thinking of asking your friend to drop in on weekends to check on your ham, then that's quite a commitment for your friend. Have you asked her about the idea? She may be unable or unwilling to commit to that.
As she's close by, it may be possible to leave your ham with her every weekend, which would probably be easier on both your friend and your hamster - but again, you'd have to ask your friend first as at that point it's almost going to be joint ownership...

Re: Should I get a hamster?
It seems like you'd be an excellent potential hamster owner
Hamster care can get extremely complicated, especially compared to dogs or cats.It doesn't help when there is so much outdated information that is still widely spread, along with all the things that simply don't get said often enough

Re: Should I get a hamster?
Personally I find owning a hamster amazing! However each individual ham is a totally different. My sister and I have had in total five hamsters. Each had there personal tastes and personalities.
For traveling, I would try to find someone to ham-sit for you. Your friend sounds like an ideal option, as he/she already owns hams themself. You should run this by them to see if they would be okay with ham-sitting your hammie during the weekends and such. You can even to do the same for your friend if they need their ham-sat.
I would also give them your emergency contact info as well as the info to a reliable vet. These things are always good to give the person you are taking care of you baby while you are away.
Hope this helps.
