I think the horse costume contest is quite an amusing spectacle! My favorite has to be the one with the rider dressed as a dragon. I also love the little white terrier, he reminds me of my neighbors old dog Benjamin!

Day 21 - Charlie's Memorial mini garden and a slightly amusing Poem

Here is a photo of Charlie's little memorial garden/flowerbed which is still a work in progress. It's nearly finished - I have some primroses and a couple of wildflower plants to add later this week when it won't look quite so bare, and a little memorial stone and a little rainbow bridge which Stepson is going to add. It's a semicircle of stones with a small flower bed and a stone bird bath (heavy stone over the burial place) surrounded by Snowdrops, other bulbs, and a hardy geranium for the summer (which is just a twig right now). It is currently inside a fireguard and lots of stones to make sure next door's cat doesn't interfere with it. It should be fully finished later this week. It is wild, wet, muddy and windy here at the moment and is also a shady north facing garden so it was hard to find suitable plants. It doesn't look beautiful yet but it will do when finished and blooming. The piece of rag and old red school top are vinegar soaked, again to deter predators. So it still looks a little bit Heath Robinson. I'll post another photo when it's finished and looking more flowery - at the moment the surrounding grass is a mud bath (you need to visualise ). I tend to take a belt and braces approach when protecting things (heavy stone and fireguard).

The poem is one I came across some years ago - it was written in the 17th century and is about the problems of dealing with the pain of love and grief. I liked it because it made me smile and I didn't know people in the 17th century wrote poems with rude words in It's just one word and not that rude really. And it shows people felt exactly the same about grief hundreds of years ago.

It's written by Sir John Suckling 1609 to 1642. He was a poet and Knight at the court of King Charles the first, one of King Charles' cavaliers in the civil war and helped King Charles fight the Scots, and raised troops for him. He kitted out himself and his troops with very fancy expensive clothes for which he was ridiculed afterwards. The King apparently said it would make the Scots fight harder to get the nice clothes - ie not much help having nice clothes (apologies to Scottish members). He was also known as a gallant and keen game player and is supposed to have invented the game of cribbage. managing to gain a fair bit of money playing it. He was also reputed to be the best bowler in England and King Charles first and his Queen were fond of his poetry.

It seems he had a bit of a sense of humour as well. Although the poem is about unrequited love, it does express the difficulty of how to deal with grief.

Love's Offence
by Sir John Suckling

1

I F when Don Cupid's dart

Doth wound a heart,

We hide our grief

And shun relief,

The smart increaseth on that score;

For wounds unsearcht but rankle more.

2

Then if we whine, look pale,

And tell our tale,

Men are in pain

For us again;

So, neither speaking doth become

The lover's state, nor being dumb.

3

When this I do descry,

Then thus think I:

Love is the fart

Of every heart;

It pains a man when 'tis kept close,

And others doth offend when 'tis let loose.

So basically - if you keep the pain (or wind!) in, it hurts you and if you let it out, it upsets everyone else - so he says whatever you do it upsets someone or yourself, which is why it is hard.

I like to think he would have been a good Hamster owner and written his Hamster lots of poems.

Charlie's memorial garden is looking really special already Serendipity & it's going to be so lovely when it's finished, (I always use metal grids & stuff to deter predators so I don't really see those bits!)it's hard to make things look nice at this time of year but you've done a really good job for Charlie there & I'm sure he's smiling down from the bridge thanking you.

The poem made me smile too, he's so right & I think he would have written some great hamster poems as well!

It is nice of you to share a picture of Charlie's memorial garden with us all, lets us all say goodbye to him. He was such a character and he'll be missed by many.

I enjoyed the poem, he summed it up just right. The background was interesting too

Charlie's memorial garden looks so special - you have put a lot of thought into it which I'm sure he will appreciate.
