I'm so sorry for Toffee. I didn't know that syrians could get wet tail when they are adults. I thought it was an illness of young hamsters. I'm sure it was pretty tough. She reminds me of my favourite hamster, she also was a long haired syrian, but mine was very social, that's why I remember her with so much love.

I really loved reading this thread. I think it was a beautiful thread, and that you had wonderful hamsters, I'm very happy for you, because you had such amazing experiences with every single one of them.

Thank You Thin Lizzy, cypher, BorisPasha, Coco61, Serendipity7000, Rads and Hamsterita, It was very hard watching her battle against wet tail – I always get really emotional when remembering Toffee as I would have loved to have spent another year with her but in the 11 months we spent together we formed a great bond and trust for one another and I gave a wonderful and happy life full with love like I have with all my hamsters.

I’m grateful I have so many lovely photo of Toffee to look through which bring back so many lovely memories – the photo of Toffee with the green pom-pom easter chick is my favourite photo of her – she was a little unsure of it at first until she realised it was a friend.

Each one of my hamsters have meant the world to me and I enjoyed every moment I spent with each of my past 6 special girls – they have all taught me so many valuable lessons about hamster care and I’m very grateful of this. I have a photo of Honey, Caramel, Cotton, Cookie, Toffee and Sherbet near Pumpkin’s cage – these photos help me to remember so many lovely memories which I cherish along with all the valuable lesson each one of them have taught me and have continued my love and passion for hamsters which I can’t thank them enough for. I’ve really enjoyed writing about my special girls and sharing their very special personalities and stories with you all.

This thread has been in loving memory of Honey, Caramel, Cotton, Cookie and Toffee. They will forever remain in my heart along with Sherbet <3

I liked the idea of theming my hamster’s names after food - especially foods which are sweet. Cotton name didn’t derive from food but it does fit into my theme as you can get cotton candy. I call them my “sweet girls!”

I knew I couldn’t give up on the hope of Toffee possibly recovering from wet tail – especially that I would have loved to spend another year with this truly special girl. I found both making this decision and not making this decision equally as hard – as we don’t want our hamsters to suffer but we can’t imagine not having them. The decision was made out of love – but I was hard seeing her suffering knowing I had the power to relive her off this pain and allow her to be at peace again. I also found this decision impossible to make for Cookie and Sherbet – but they let me know it was the right time as they weren’t their usual happy and food loving selves – both started to refuse to eat and were rapidly losing weight. This made the decision the tiniest bit easier but the decision to or not to have a hamster PTS is made out of love.

Syrian Hamsters can get wet tail at any age as the disease is stress related this is why younger hamsters are more likely to get wet tail due to all the stress of moving home.
