Default dogs and hamsters

i foster dogs for a rescue centre and have a terrier (part yorkie, part norfolk with a bit of cairn)called misty. she is a lovely girl of 5. she is fascinated by ratchet and watches him. i have moved the cage away from misty. but i wonder if ratchet is scared of misty. what would be the signs. i saw misty with her nose right up against the bars and ratchet doing the same almost nose touching. misty was just interested and ratchet seemed okay. wouldnt want to be causing stress to ratchet

I don't know much about the signs of a hamster being scared, but generally, what I've learned is that when hamsters feel threatened or startled, they will stay very still, not moving at all. My Winnie does this when she hears a sound she doesn't recognise.

I have dogs and cats in my house and I keep them well away from the room that Winnie is in, the cats for obvious reasons (I even have a lock on my door because my cats can open them!) but I imagine a dog would be a very scary thing for a hamster, so boisterous and often loud. I don't know much about it, that's just what I assume.
As far as I know I think terriers are hunting/mousing dogs? So I would be especially careful . Hope this helps somewhat and sorry if I said something you already know

I would be cautious about having your dog quite so close to your hamster, especially when you aren't in the room. When you are in the room and your dog approaches the cage, keep a close eye out. You said she's a rescue dog which makes me wonder what, if anything, happened to her for her to be in the rescue home? Something could trigger one day which is something I would look out for. Obviously I don't know why your dog was in the rescue home so I might be completely wrong about her. She does seem very sweet though!
In terms of your hamster, keep an eye out for your hamster becoming very stiff when your dog is near the cage. Or your hamster could become startled, jump or even run away and hide under something. If your hamster appears to carry on and acts normally, I wouldn't be too worried about it other than just keeping an eye on it.
Hope this helps!

I agree, just keep an eye on things. Hamsters display pretty much the same signs as any other creature when they are afraid: wide eyes, ears alert, body rigid, jumpy, and of course, running away and hiding. Hamsters in particular will make squeaking/screeching noises, flip over on their back, push away with their paws, bite, and urinate/defecate if they feel threatened.

Personally, I have a dog who wouldn't harm a fly. Consequently, the hamsters seem mostly unafraid of him. If your hamster is approaching the dog, that's probably a good sign.

I have two miniature schnauzers who hate my hams, gerbils, and rabbit. But, they can all be kept together stress free. I would recommend keeping your hamsters cage and your dog in separate rooms to prevent stress on your hamster, and to help the dog not be so crazed trying to get at the little guy. Terriers are bred to hunt vermin and hamsters fall under the category of vermin and thus are often viewed as prey by all dogs, but especially small terriers. Keep them separate but don't stress too much. Best wishes

i fostered 2 chihuahuas for 4 weeks and they hated ratchet so kept them away. the labradoodle wasnt bothered and the terrier i am now fostering just seems interested although she cant get to the cage now. when she did, ratchet was on other side of cage and went over to the dog and was sniffing him. the dog didnt bark. i still wouldnt trust her on her own with ratchet and at night when he is active the living room door is shut.
