Lightbulb New Hamster Owner!

Hi all! I have just joined this forum because I have heard many good reviews from youtube and thought I would give it a go!

I owned a couple hamsters as a kid, possibly about 10 years ago and sadly did not do enough research on them as I should have.

I will be getting a new hamster within the next couple weeks and have spent the last two weeks researching SO much! I have learned a lot, and this time I am going to correct my mistakes!

However, I am having trouble finding a lot of decent Syrian hamster toys/hide outs. I see so many cute wooden houses for dwarfs but I can't seem to find any big enough for a Syrian. If anybody has any that they know about it would be greatly appreciated for the help to links or where I might be able to find some!

And any other general advice would be helpful as well I feel like I'm close to very knowledgeable already just on the information I have learned from the hours a day researching hamsters!

I am also getting a hamster really soon and have been researching like crazy. Again I am also getting a Syrian hamster. When buying some toys online, look for rat sized things like tunnels and houses. On YouTube I HIGHLY recommend ErinsAnimals. She is really good with lots of advice and information.

Hi katiekay and welcome to HC.
I tend to go for the rat hideouts for my ham as they're spacious.

Hi & welcome to HC

Look forward to hearing about your ham when s/he comes home.
I'm sure some of the US members will have ideas for hideouts available there but most people use rat size houses & toys.

Petco bendable bridges are perfect for Syrians! They're cheap for how big they are,and make a perfect but easy to check on hiding spot, and can be bent into various shapes as well.

Clay/terracotta pots are also great, but some hamsters might make them roll around by burrowing underneath which could be a problem.I haven't had an issue with a Kaytee tunnel made of the same material I found, but I will say the medium size of it is only good for small Syrians or young Syrians. For the investment, you'd be better off getting the largest size. This can't be found in most pet shops though, and I've only seen them in Petsupermarket

If you can find a mug or tealight holder that is large enough for a Syrian, those are great too!Reptile sections can be a good area to check in pet stores, especially with things like half logs and resin hideouts.Be careful to only get wood items that are safe wood of course, but do keep an eye out for anything useful and keep an open mind!

If you want ideas, here are a few pet items I have ordered for Syrian housing. I tend to go for heavier, wooden things that work well in a tank. I hope I'm allowed to link to Amazon.

1. https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-100079...dp/B0002AS5MI/

This one is a nice size, perfectly square (good for tanks), creates a level, is bottomless, and the top comes off. The only downside is that you have to assemble it yourself. When I ordered three of them, I ended up putting one together wrong, and another I ended up breaking a piece off of because it wasn't cut as well as the others. (I was still able to use it.) Otherwise, it's not a bad price for what you're getting. Just put it together carefully. I measured the roof of one of mine and it's about 7.5" x 8".

2. https://www.amazon.com/Super-Pet-Lar...dp/B0002AS5KK/

I like this one too, for the same reasons, but it does have quite a foot print on it, and I have had hamsters reject it because of its height. It would be nice if they made it in a medium size.

3. https://www.amazon.com/Grayline-4071...dp/B000LNVXIY/

I have made bedrooms for hamsters with small wire shelves like this one, paired with bricks, tiles, or boards. The hamsters love it. Just set the rack in the cage and set a tile on top of it. You can use a brick with holes for the door.

I'd be wary of putting kitchen rack type items in hamster cages. It could easily get chewed, and since most would be made of unsafe metals or have unsafe coatings that would be extremely dangerous if not potentially deadly

Hi Welcome aboard the good Ship HC, you could make your own bits and pieces for your Hammy using Popsicle sticks or hardwood tongue depressors and kindergarten PVA non toxic glue.

Elmer's glue in the US!It's cheap, safe, and there really isn't anything easier to find It is also available in the UK apparently, but regardless of that it is the only glue I've seen to have the courage to essentially state in a fairly public manor that they don't use animal parts which is a bonus.

You can just make levels out of wooden dowels and basswood sheets or popsicle sticks, along with Elmer's glue.No need for questionable(and more than likely unsafe)metal items or anything expensive,as you could certainly make loads of these for very little money!
