Leaving Hams with others...
Hello all,
I really hope this doesn't sound silly, but I was wondering how many of you have ever left your hamsters with someone else to be looked after?
My little boy (Ricky) has been poorly in the last couple of weeks and has had a UTI that still hasn't properly gone. He's been given baytril from the vet. (I did start another thread over in healthcare on this).
The thing is, I'm due to go and stay with family members from tomorrow until Friday. It's been organised for ages and my only chance to see my neice before she returns to Germany. I was going to leave Ricky at home being as it was only two nights, but my mind just wouldn't rest with this so I've managed to get a trusted friend of my mom's to look after him.
She wasn't keen on the idea of having my key and coming here to check on him - she said she would rather have him at her house, so I've taken him there this afternoon. He was a bit distressed on the journey, but seemed okay once he was there and settled.
I'm now back at home and can't stop thinking about him! I know that he will be well looked after, I've gone through how to put the antibiotics in his water, and left him al his favourite things, but I still feel worried because I know he's not 100% well.
Do people think I've done the right thing? I guess it's better for him to be with someone, and be warm and have fresh water and stuff.
I feel like I'm just being daft but I feel guilty going away!!

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
I can imagine how you feel, it's not easy having to leave our hams at all but so much harder when they've been unwell but many people leave them with sitters & they do fine, it sounds as though Ricky is going to be well taken care of so try not to worry or feel bad.

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
Thank you so much for replying. I didn't think it would be this hard to leave him. If he was well I wouldn't worry so much. It's just that when he's poorly I think we all prefer to be the one taking care of them don't we?
I need to trust that he'll be okay. It's certainly better than him being home alone I guess!
I'm hoping the antibiotics may have helped him by the time I get back. Thank you again. Sorry to be such a worrier. X

No problem, we all worry about them!
I'm sure he's better off with the sitter than alone & I hope the meds have done the trick soon too.

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
I always worry when I go away and leave my animals in the hands of someone else. Its natural, especially when they havent been well.
Hope you manage to have an enjoyable few days and that Ricky is soon back to full health.

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
I wish Ricky better! I haven't had this issue with Jasper as he's always been in perfect health (thank god) but I've had this with my piggie, Oreo. My parents separated a long time ago so normally I'm fine with staying over without Oreo at my Dad's (I trust my mum with him for a night) but now every time I have to leave him, I just feel sick. He's been very poorly (gut stasis and now the joys of dental disease) so he's been on a lot of meds. Anyway, whenever I come back, Oreo is always fine but very excited to see me.

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
You did the right thing getting someone to hamsit Ricky while you're away. You're not being silly at all worrying about him. The sitter will take good care of him, I'm glad he's not being left alone.

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
It is much better to have someone there in case of an emergency than to not have someone and potentially come back to an ill or dead pet.Accidents can happen when you least expect them to,so never assume nothing will happen since that is exactly when something terrible will most likely happen!
Pet sitters are definitely one of the most valuable tools a pet owner can have. While hamsters can in a way be left on their own if they're healthy,as I've said before accidents can happen and it is better to be safe than sorry. For other pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, and a lot of birds or even fish it would be extremely important if not mandatory as in a lot of cases not getting something which starts as a minor issue solved can end horribly.

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
Every year I go for my regular European trip of 21 days to visit relatives. For a number of years I have been arranging with my next door neighbour to look after the dwarves. At times 4 or as few as one solitary boy.
I make sure that there is enough fresh veg (coli, broccoli, avocado, peas) in the fridge and nuts mixture and the extra nuts I add. Leave a few quid to buy new supplies. She always takes a good care of them. Even puts them in their balls for a regular scoot around. well, they have never complained, yet I think they are always happy to see me back. Soon as they hear my voice on arrival back they come to the side of the cage, as if to welcome me back. If you have a reliable friend, he should not come to any harm

Re: Leaving Hams with others...
Thank you all so much for your reassuring messages. I have just picked him up and he is home now. She said he's been fine!
Seems he had a nice time and was well looked after. I just now need to monitor the health situation again to hope he's fully recovered. Thank you all again. I was so worried about leaving him. X
