Re: We have some questions :)
I tend to give mostly natural foods as treats to mine, extra seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, hemp, flax, safflower maybe a spray of millet in the cage, mealworms are very popular with hybrids generally, just plain oat flakes are good, small pieces of fresh veg always go down well too, one of the few healthy commercial treats available that they enjoy is shrimp cookies.
They do have very individual tastes so you need to experiment a little but there are plenty of healthy foods to try without giving bought sugary treats.
Burgess dwarf hamster harvest food is generally enjoyed by most although a bit limited in it's range of ingredients is still a good basic mix & most of it gets eaten except the grass pellets, I don't think any hams like those!

Re: We have some questions :)
It definitely doesn't have to be from a pet store to be a wonderful treat!Low sugar baby snacks and baby food in general can be good, but you do have to watch what a serving is and figure out how much of a serving would be fine occasionally which is hard at times.I would recommend Gerber puffs, but unfortunately they tend to be expensive in the UK due to being imported however if you can find a reasonable price for them they're very nice and if fed in moderation(a piece or two every few days)they have barely any sugar

Re: We have some questions :)
I tend to think with any species prone to diabetes any added sugar is too much sugar & hams don't need human foods to be happy & healthy so I would avoid things like baby biscuits personally & just stick to more natural foods.

Now she's considering a Chinese Hamster but we can't find a place in the Wirral that sells them.

Re: We have some questions :)
The same would apply to a Chinese, with hideouts and such being a bit smaller as they're a smaller hamster. They can eat the same food and treats, but housing can be a little different, though something around 60 x 30 or preferably 70 x 40 would be perfectly fine for a Chinese hamster.

Re: We have some questions :)
A Zoozone 1 would be great for a Chinese hamster They probably will sell them, but it can be hard to guarantee just what species may be available.

Re: We have some questions :)
Our pets at home is pretty small so fingers crossed I soaked the cage and plastic toys down in hot water with washing up liquid then wiped it down with white vinegar, hoping that should have killed anything. I'm gonna see if the have the pet safe disinfectant next time I go but I cant ever remember seeing it.

Re: We have some questions :)
Chinese hams can be quite hard to find now & P@H stopped selling them some time ago unless they've had a change of policy which I don't think they have.
Chinese & Russians are quite different in character, has she done much research into different species & thought about what it is she wants in a ham?
Might be worth having a read through some of the threads in the different species sections to get a better idea of what each one is like although of course they are all individuals there are some general species specific characteristics to consider.
