Default Trixie wheel question

I bought the 11 inch Trixie rodent wheel for my Syrian and she's chewing on the entrance holes. Can I remove the front of the wheel and use it like a normal open wheel? I'm scared it will break or something so I wanted to seek a second opinion.
It also seems noisier without the front

It probably won't work properly.A safer option would be a wood wheel of similar or larger size,so that plastic is not ingested.

It won't work properly or be safe without the front & unfortunately some hams do chew the plastic front on enclosed wheels & once they get into the habit it can be almost impossible to stop them so an open wheel would probably be better.

As cypher said, It won't work properly and it could be dangerous.

I have that wheel. One day my ham decided that his wheel would be an excellent place to hoard his food, and his tank is in my room, so you can imagine how difficult it was for me to sleep with the wheel rattling all the time with the food inside it. I thought that without the front part, the food will come out of the wheel by itself if he place it there, so I removed the front part, and as soon as I did it I realized that without it the wheel bends easily, but more over, and more important, the edges of the wheel are too sharp and it could hurt the ham, so I quickly put it back. You can try to remove the wheel every time you catch him doing it (that's what I did and the second time that I did it he learnt that the wheel wasn't a good place to hoard), and then place it back. Maybe he'll catch the idea that he can't do that, but if he continues with that habit, you should think about buying another one as suggested before.

I would get the 29cm Karlie wheel (open). It's silent and is on at £11.99 at zooplus at the moment and they seem to be in stock at the moment. It's a great wheel. Just needs the running track checking carefully for any splinters - a piece of sanding paper handy is an idea just to give it a quick rub over. I did mine in 10 minutes. Also painting it with plastikote is a good idea in case it gets wee'd in. Also only takes about 10 minutes, then let it dry overnight and do a second coat.

Wonderland Exercise Wheel: Great Small Pet Accessories at zooplus

If she chews that wheel as well, it means she's a chewer! Rather than a hamster who doesn't like wheels with holes in. But at least when wood is chewed you can smooth it down with the sandpaper again.

Although that link for the plastikote is for an add-on item, if you click other sellers, you can just buy it without it being an add-on, that's what I do. You just brush it on with a normal paintbrush - I used a 1" one.

The only other open wheels I can think of are the 12" comfort wheel (which is huge and can be noisy and reports of it breaking easily) or the Savic Rolly wheel - also noisy and not as long lasting.

Or - depending on the size of your hamster - a Carolina storm bucket wheel. They are also silent and height adjustable but only have a diameter of 10.5" which would be ok for a smaller or average syrian. I think they're available on Etsy but aren't cheap as imported from the US. Also available directly from the US I think.

I'd go for the Karlie wheel. It's a slight hassle having to do a little bit of sanding maybe and plastikoting, but it's a good sturdy wheel and silent and a good size for all syrians.

Another vote for the karlie wooden wheel here. They are great.
Silent runners are pretty awesome too, although one of my hamsters has his on the stand (not cage bars) and it rattles a bit.

Pip chewed the front holes of her Trixie wheel, I had to remove it and leave it open, she is fine with the open wheel and it seems to be safe enough Pip has not had a problem with the open wheel at all.

Thank you this is perfect. I've seen people use it open for rats and degus I just wasn't sure.

Gonna post this here as well just for reference. This wheel is all I could get my hands on. I CAN NOT BUY ANOTHER WHEEL!
It's impossible to find hamster supplies where I live and I was lucky to find this cheap online.
Also I'm 16 I can't afford to buy a new hamster wheel that may cost me €40 every month which is how it has been for the last while.
Just wanted to know if I could use it open or not.
I'll try putting lemon juice on it to deter her from chewing it for a while

I have a zoozone and a 12 inch silent runner sadly wouldn't fit inside it
