Default Wood pellet litter

I've been cleaning Rupert's old cage ready for a new Syrian and the stubborn urine stains have made me really adamant that I want to persist with litter training the new ham!

I know you can get small animal litter but that seems to come in small boxes and be quite pricey.

Is it ok to use wood pellet cat litter in the litter tray, like this? - Sainsbury's - Please enable cookies or JavaScript

If not, then what is the best thing to use? I would prefer something I can get in supermarkets or if online, then in small quantities.

Wood based cat litter is perfectly safe for hamsters (it's even used in the Long Haired Syrian show pens). Some hamsters have found it difficult to walk over although I think that's mainly an issue with dwarfs.

If you can get some relatively cheaply then it might be worth a try to see how your hamster gets on. Another alternative would be a paper based cat litter but that seems a little harder to find in places such as supermarkets.

You can order paper based cat litter pellets from Viovet It may not be as easy a solution, but it is still safer as with any wood product allergies are a risk.I'm almost certain the paper pellets from Viovet are a decent size, not too big but not too small either, just a few kg I think!

My showing longhaired hamsters have wood cat litter pellets as their substrate as well as in their show pens and all are fine Out of all the hams I've had, I've only had one with a substrate allergy - he was allergic to the wood shavings in the show pens (and had to live on a higher shelf to avoid any contamination from penning the other hams). It's me that's been allergic to substrates not the hams! You can get paper pellets from PAH (Back 2 Nature and Biocatolet) and sometimes I've found Biocatolet in the supermarkets.

Oreo used to have Back 2 Nature from Pets At Home. It's a paper based litter for small animals. Never had any allergy problems, but it's not the most comfortable to sit on. Absorbency is ok but you'd need to change the little tray regularly.

If you get a 30L bag, it's much cheaper on Amazon, but that would last years with a hamster. I went through one every month with weekly guinea pig cage cleans.

I buy paper based refills. I now also use shredded paper for the bedding. In the past few suffered from mites, quickly passed on from one to another. Treatment is quite effective, but better to prevent it.

I've always found the chinchilla sand we use for sand baths the best thing for litter trays tbh. Pellets are safe enough but I've didn't find my ham (dwarf) keen to use them when I tried, had much more success with sand & it's easy to clean out too.

I use Back 2 Nature pellets to line the base of my hamster cage and then put the layer of substrate on top and my hamsters who I couldn't litter train I used to put some extra pellets in the corner they decided to pee in.They are really absorbent and do have good odour control.
But as cypher has said chinchilla sand also works really well in hamster litter trays - some hamster even chose to pee in the sand themselves and it does make spot cleaning easier.
