Hamster colours question.....
I'm more familiar with the world of rescue bunnies I also know that black bunnies are often left behind and they're not adopted as often because people think they're boring does the same apply to hamsters or not?

Re: Hamster colours question.....
My daughter did an extensive project on this subject when a school. People don't tend to be keen on white hamsters and especially white with pink eyes. They seem to liken them to mice or rats which many people are less keen on.
The most popular colours were Golden, Cream and patterned hamsters particularly contrasty banded hamsters.

Re: Hamster colours question.....
I absolutely love our black hamster (she's in my avatar), but I do have to admit that she is harder to photograph well! Everything has to have the brightness etc. changed. I wouldn't change her for the world now I know her, but had I had the choice in the pet shop I think I probably would have gone for a patterned hamster - perhaps golden and white.
I've heard the same thing about people not wanting to adopt black cats and dogs - reputedly part of the reason is that they're harder to photograph - which is an issue when people are browsing profiles on rescue websites.

Re: Hamster colours question.....
I haven't come across any particular dislikes for black hams or reluctance to adopt them, I can understand the problem with white hams that souffle mentioned, personally black hams are one of my favourite colourings!

Re: Hamster colours question.....
I love black hamsters! They're so cute! One of my friends used to have a black syrian and he was the cutest!!
My current hamsters are a natural coloured hybrid and a white satin haired hybrid with dark red eyes.

Re: Hamster colours question.....
I wonder if the species actually plays a part in people's colour preferences? Is an Albino Campbells or a Black Eyed White Chinese cuter in the average pet owners mind than a white Syrian for example?

Re: Hamster colours question.....
I don't think I've ever had much preference when it comes to how hamsters look Perhaps it is just that I find all hamsters adorable,or maybe that I am drawn by personalities of hamsters rather than their looks!

Re: Hamster colours question.....
Fluffagrams I think that species does play a part. In my experience the public perception of a hamster is a classic 'teddy bear' type version with rounded ears and big eyes. The public also like the lack of tail as many associate tails with mice and rats which in genera they like less than hamsters. The rounder and more 'toy' like the better as well as having an interesting colour or pattern. That seems to be why pet shops like bands and spottys rather than your plain old brown type hamster. Russian type hamsters are quite well liked especially greys and pearls. Chinese tend to be a bit long for the general population and they don't appreciate the males baggage. People think Bianca is a mouse quite frequently. The popularity of your classic Golden has stood the test of time though. SH Goldens are the first to be chosen from our litters.

Re: Hamster colours question.....
I have a two white robos and one agouti robo. I love the white robos fur coat.
I also have a black Russian dwarf who I adore as well. I have had a white Russian albino who I got really attached to.
