Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
It doesn't make it easier for her that it was the frozen kind we found some organic frozen raspberries and pomegranate seeds recently. Can they have that by the way? Pomegranate?

Aww Zelda, you are so funny sitting on the raspberry, instead you've got a messy bun instead of face lol!

Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
I'm not sure about pomegranate. I thought dwarf hamsters were meant to have veg (not carrot) rather than fruit, as the can be susceptible to diabetes.

Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
Yeah, she only gets 1 to taste when we get something new. It wasn't even a whole raspberry, just a little under a half. They are primarily for romeo.

Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
I haven't been able to find anything for sure about pomegranate for hams so I wouldn't give it, do go easy with any fruit though, even half a raspberry is still quite a lot, I do give mine half a blueberry as a rare treat but it is best to stick to veg.

Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
She doesn't get fruit regularly. She will get a tiny piece when romeo gets something she hasn't tried before. The frequency is maybe once a month max.
The raspberry was an extraordinary big portion. She didn't eat it all though.

Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
Honestly a tiny piece monthly of fruit is most likely not going to hurt a diabetes prone hamster. If it were a particularly sugary fruit, perhaps it could be problematic, but not all fruit is extremely high in sugar so it really must be considered on a more individual basis rather than an outright assumption that every single fruit is equally bad
It should be possible to find exact values including amounts of sugar for certain portions of fruit though nutrition websites, preferably government run ones, and with that information it would be a lot easier to determine within the variety of safe fruit what would be best if you really do want a special occasion treat of fruit.

Re: Zelda and the cowardly walnut!
Zelda has been STRANGE today. Almost erratic. Aggie noticed she was scratching the same place a lot. Seemed like a nibble maybe. I just noticed her behavior. Different than her usual self. She constantly put her nose up, almost in a hunt pose, like she smells something. And she is fixating on my fingertips. Sniffing them, trying to bite them. Usually she mainly just licks everything. There was none of that today. And very quickly she speeds up to a point that I have to physically restrain her to be able to transport her. She usually just goes hand to hand when we transport her. Today I had to hold my fingers around her to kind of slow her down by making her work to get free from one hand, to get to the next. I know I didn't have anything on my hands. I came straight from washing my hands with the usual soap.
