Default Pets at Home Small animal Disinfectant

Hello,

Just wandered if the Small Animal Disinfectant from Pets at Home is safe?

Thanks

I usually buy the Johnson's Clean and Safe disinfectant spray and I've not had any problems with it in the almost five years that I've been keeping hamsters. To be honest, unless your hamster has been unwell or you're cleaning up a cage that has been used by another hamster, I find that using a small amount of regular washing up liquid and hot water works just as well for regular cage cleans.

Ok, well I was ill and in the same room as Nutmeg, she was due a clean and I just wanted to be able to be 100% sure the cage was germ free, as I didn't handle her so I still want to make sure.

I've been using Johnson's clean and safe for a couple of years now, before I was using Bob Martin's.

I never used cleaning sprays of any kind. Warm water and kitchen towel is all you need for wiping down shelves or around the cage and washing your hands with plain unscented or lemon soap! There are many small animal products sold and many are not necessary unless of course a hamster has diagnosed wet tail or other infection. But even then, I would probably ask my vet for Virkon or something more reliable if that was the case.

It`s always good to be vigilant when you have any infection though. x

I use a little Dawn dish soap, then spray some vinegar in the cage after that.

I always use Virkon but then I've got a lot of hams I feel better if I have something good especially for cleaning cages/toys between hamsters, and for new hams/poorly hams in quarantine. I have used the bought sprays in the past (I liked the Beaphar one as it wasn't scented).

I use Formula H which is a concentrated liquid and you only need a tiny bit in some hot water, a little goes a long way. I don't wash the entire cage in it every clean, but do wipe the toilet corner, nest areas and wheels with it as Joey, and Rupert when I had him, peed in their wheels. It's also safe to use on food bowls etc too if rinsed well afterwards.

It's got a light scent but when heavily diluted you can't really smell much at all.

I only use any disinfectant when I really need to, not as a routine thing for cleaning cages, for an unscented disinfectant I really like safe4 (safe enough to use on bowls & bottles without needing to rinse though I always do!) & I also use F10 occasionally.

I use Milton sterilizing fluid diluted when ever I need to, it works nicely.
