Default Different Enviroment

Heya~
I've a question: I'm thinking about getting a hamster soon, but my boyfriend is worried since I'm often on his place under the week and also on weekends.
I read that's it's possible to let hamster alone 1-2 days... but I really would like to take it with me if I spend my weekends by my boyfriend.
And I'm not sure if a hamster can handle two homes ? Does he maybe get used to it, or is it a too huge stress ?

Hi & welcome to HC.

A lot will depend on the individual hamster really, some are more easily stressed than others & you won't know that until you have your ham, it's not ideal having two homes but it can work, if you can keep your ham in the same cage & take that with you it would help (not easy with a good size cage!) but if he had two different cages as long as you didn't over clean so each cage retained his scent it might be ok.
If you're only going to be away for one or two nights at a time then it would also be possible to leave your ham as long as he had plenty of food & water & you were sure the cage was safe (no potential for falls etc) but ideally you want to be around your ham as much as possible.

I think it is a bit stressful to move them between cages a lot. It sounds as if your current lifestyle isn't really ready for the commitment of a pet right at this time. Leaving them most weekend and some weekdays will always carry an element of risk as they could get ill, hurt, trapped, bored, drain the water bottle, escape and if you were not around to sort out these matters then it could be serious.
It would also be unfair to not let them have playtime, handling and out of cage time for days when you are away in my opinion.
Maybe wait till you are more settled and make plans for that time when you can give a hamster the constant care it needs?

That would be too long to leave a ham regularly, that's half the week really & you couldn't keep him/her in a travel type cage that long.
I think souffle has a good point, I know it's hard really wanting a pet of any kind when the time or situation isn't right but it may well be better to wait until you're able to give your ham a permanent home & all the time & attention it will need.

If you could have one (not too small or too big) cage and transport that cage to your boyfriends it would be less stressful to the hamster than moving back and fourth between two cages, as it would be the same cage with their scent on and hides and toys would be the same.

It would just be the cage location that changed.
