Default Re: Hamster or Mouse?

I just got a pet hamster, and it is a dwarf winter white. As it was my first one when I went to buy him, I asked the employees for the most tame one they had. Right off the bat he was eating off my hand without a problem.

I got my dwarf winter white for $9.99. So pretty cheap.

I can get him out and hold him and play with him, he mostly sleeps through the day, but he will wake up and play for 15 or so minute intervals, and then he wakes up at night (for me) pretty late, 9:45 to 10:00. In the mornings he is up until about 8 or 9 before going to bed.

As they are quite small they dont eat much so feeding is pretty cheap. I will probably have to buy more in another 6 to 8 months I think? Anyway I am very glad I got one. Of course I am biased on dwarf hamsters because I got the Winter White, but next time I think I will go for either a Chinese or a Syrian!

Oh for caging I made a DIY bin cage mabye took one hour, but it was super duper simple and cheap. Just some small gage wire netting and a bin cage. Five bucks at walmart for the cage, and 5 at a Lowes for the netting.

If you put the bedding deep enough, then you won't need to fully clean it as often, which cuts down on bedding price.

That could work too, regardless of hamster or mouse! However, making it so the frame allows for a good depth of substrate is important.Melamine and plexiglass are another option just like wood and could be easier to access than safe untreated wood.

1/8" wire would be necessary for mice, but that isn't always very easy to find Also, mice may chew through the wood faster than they'd chew through other types of cages,so that is another thing to consider.

Bin cages could work for a dwarf hamster but they're nowhere near as simple to make as DIY cages using other materials.Plus, bins can easily crack while you're cutting them and then you end up having to buy more and wasting time and money.

I've found that as far a being chilled and cuddly goes, a general rule is that female hamsters are more active than males. Obviously it depends on the individual hamster but from experience the female Syrians I've had have been much more active than people I know's males have been.

Thank you! If I get a mouse (or two females) I'll use our 10 gallon tank. If I get a hamster- I'll get a Syrian and I'll make a bin cage or a homemade wood & wire one. Now- all I need to figure out is if I can use Kaytee Clean N Cozy mixed with other stuff (tissues, paper towels, toilet paper, paper shopping bags, etc.) (for either of the species) as well as if I can mix my own feed.

Shredded toilet tissue is fine to use, most of us use that for nests, you would need a lot to make any amount of substrate though even mixed with other things, paper towels & other kinds of paper aren't so good, they don't break down as easily, other kinds of paper can sometimes have sharp edges to so do be careful what you use.
If you're on a tight budget then do give some thought to a vet fund before you get your ham or mice, no matter how well we care for our animals they can still get sick & you never know when you might need a vet which can be expensive, it's best to think about putting aside enough money for that eventuality if you're not sure you'll be able to pay out a large sum on the spur of the moment!

Mixing your own food isn't usually a good idea unless you have lots of hams. It's generally more expensive then just buying a bag for 10 bucks which will last for a really long time.

I have syrians, dwarves and mice. Mice DEFINITELY smell more! I never notice my hamsters smelling really. The boys also smell worse than the girls, but if you have a large group of girls living together sometimes it's not much better. If you do decide on mice, don't keep males together. The likelihood of finding two that will live together without fighting to the death is minimal. Females tend to get along pretty well, even if they're from different litters. What I will say though is that if you're buying feeder mice, take them to the vet right away to get them sexed properly. Dont trust the store. You might buy a male for a pet and end up with a pregnant female. Someone else did and that's how I ended up with my first babies!

I'd say that mice would be more entertaining to watch in their cages than hamsters, but are very active and not prone to sitting still for long or at all! My boy Drake is super tame and will climb all over me. I can trust him to be out climbing around on me and the couch when I'm doing whatever. He rides about the house on my shoulder like a bird. There's only him and one girl I know won't jump off. Mice move fast and they jump far!!! I have a dwarf ham who happily sits still on me for cuddles and an active syrian who never seems to sit still, so remember that hamster personalities can vary and gender/species stereotypes don't always apply.

If you have any questions, feel free to message me!

If you've seen the other thread on the Petco sale, you could get a 40 gallon breeder tank for $40, a Syrian hamster and a much less smelly pet
