Sand for a Sand Bath
Would this sand be ok for a sand bath for my new winter white? I was planning on using "regular" sand, like the kind you get at a store where it's outside in a big pile. However, i read some stuff that said no... Would it be fine? If not how about this stuff? https://www.walmart.com/ip/50LB-Play-Sand/39086669

Re: Sand for a Sand Bath
Regular type sand is kind of a risk, play sand is best. The play sand you linked is completely fine,as long as you bake it first(let it cool though before using it). It's also an incredible value and should last more than 6 months, compared to chinchilla bath sand which is far more expensive!

Re: Sand for a Sand Bath
Would it be ok if I used it for a week or so until I could get the other sand?

Which one?If the play sand is what you're talking about you can use that all the time and it will be fine as long as you sterilize it,but the other one I wouldn't risk.

Re: Sand for a Sand Bath
I would wait until you can get hold of play sand. "Regular" sand clumps differently when it's wet I think, which makes it unsuitable. I'd say it's best not to use anything if you don't have safe children's play sand or chinchilla sand.

Re: Sand for a Sand Bath
Ok... I guess I won't risk it, I definitely want what's best for Zero.

Re: Sand for a Sand Bath
Drying and sterilizing won't change the structure on a molecular level to make the sand suitable But of course only the best for any little ham

I think play sand contains chemicals and stuff like that that can harm your hamster. when you go to the pet shops and you see a hamster on the packet then you know that it is safe for hamster use and is designed for hamsters. im not saying you cant put it in the sand, because it might be ok, but the risk is quite big

Re: Sand for a Sand Bath
Most types of play sand should be suitable as an option if chinchilla sand isn't and will quite often have undergone additional preparation methods to make it suitable for use with children. Given the fact that it has to meet certain standards before being certified as being safe for children it would be unlikely to contain any harmful chemicals.
If you can't get hold of play sand or chinchilla sand then I would delay giving a sand bath to your hamster. It won't do him any harm to go without one for a week or two.
