Re: boy or girl URGENT
I don't think it matters too much. Go to the rescue, have a look around, see what genders they have etc. Maybe ask to hold a couple of different hamsters and choose which one you like best from behaviour, personality, tameness, health and appearance. That way you can get the hamster you are happiest with.
Females are generally more active than males but I've never had a Syrian, only my male ww.

Re: boy or girl URGENT
The only boy I've ever had (I only had him for two weeks, so it's not a really good comparison.) was 10x more active then any of my females ever were. Then again, he was extremely young.
However, both of my girls would always accept a snuggle session despite their VERY active play time sessions. Although, it really does depend on the owner and hamster. Girls are totally manageable, and I find personally that they don't smell any worse than boys who tend to scent mark more often.
I think it just depends on what gender you'd prefer, as both make equally wonderful and loving pets! Because no matter how much past experience every one has on here, you could get the odd girl/boy out that is super active or super laid back for their gender. Trust me, I know!

Re: boy or girl URGENT
Every hamster is going to be different,so just go with the hamster that you feel the most comfortable with when you go to adopt and all will be fine

Gender didn't come in to it when we picked Heidi. The pet store opened 4 or 5 cages up and she came strutting out! Like to think she picked us!! We've had her a month and for a first hamster I've found her a pleasure and easy to deal with. She is a total diva but she doesn't misbehave!

Re: boy or girl URGENT
LOL I'm with Souffle on the male for a first timer. But it really is only for the situation when they go into heat. Some females aren't bad at all, but others can be pretty bad with the strong scent. My Nutmeg was a regular little skunk. I loved her anyway.
Happy hamster hunting!
