Default Bar chewing stressing me out

Is it only me, or does bar chewing from our furry friends stress you out? I do everything for these lil guys and get so upset when I hear them chew the bars, as obviously they are bored or distressed. All a part of being a hamster owner!

I have two syrian males, in seperate rooms! I wash my hands when I stroke one and the other. Hammie is my eldest, in which is tame. Bobby is the newby, which is chewing the bars all the time (i'm taking action if he carries on on Friday). I think even now being in seperate rooms, Hammie smells and hears him and now he's bar chewing too! (He hasnt done this for AGES). Their distress is distressing me! (I've written a previous thread about what happened when I put the cages in the same room).

Is there anything more that I can do or hear to settle my mind, would be appreciated

Default Re: Bar chewing stressing me out

Hi Fluffyhamsters,
I've just replied to another thread for someone else regarding this.
I used to get so stressed out with it that I ended up grinding my teeth and got a lecture from my dentist.
I know it's hard but you need too ignore it, when they do it walk away from them giving no eye contact at all, do something like Housework, Put on music, TV or read a book.
I've alwasys weaved cardboard through the bars, doing it from the inside of the cage and weaving through the bars will give them something to amuse them. I remember I had cardboard weaved all over Twinkle's cage and in the end she got bored and gave up. It's also important to praise your ham when he/she stops but also to walk away if it starts again.
Harvey has chewed the bars a couple of times and I stand my ground and walk away ignoring him and he stops.
If you give them attention when they do it, they'll continue to do it.
It won't stop overnight but be persistant and it will.
