Default Keeping room cool

People say when it's hot outside you should keep the windows and curtains SHUT and a fan on. I'm a bit confused because surely the windows being shut makes it hotter in the room? Certainly it does in my room.
However the reason I'm asking is because if everyone goes out then I have to shut my windows but I leave the fan on for Sweep. But on Saturday I'm out all day and I think everyone else is too which means I'd have to keep my windows shut, but am worried if it's very hot that Sweep will overheat even with the fan on. Anything that goes in the fridge never stays cold for long! Though I haven't tried chilling the flower pot yet so hopefully that will stay cold for a bit longer. What else can I do to make sure Sweep is ok for the day? I'll be back by the time it is evening and hopefully cooler so will be able to open the windows then ... Should I give him an extra water bottle? Or some veg maybe? Hopefully he'll be asleep but I know sometimes when it's hot in the day he doesn't sleep much! The other option is to leave the window so it looks shut but is actually open a tiny bit as it locks like that (I don't know how to describe that!) Would that be a bit better for him? That way he gets some air too. But I don't know if that would still make the room too hot for him? I'm hoping there will be someone here that day so I can leave the windows open, but it's unlikely they will be!

I know it does seem a bit strange keeping windows closed when it's hot but it does actually keep the room cooler as opening the windows just lets in more hotter air as the day heats up, it is important to keep the curtains closed too though to keep out as much heat & sunlight as possible.
I'm not sure about the whole of the UK but I didn't think Saturday was forecast to be that sweltering so windows & curtains closed, a fan on (not directed at the cage) & just a few cool things from the fridge should be enough, even though they may not stay cool to the touch long they will be helping to reduce the overall temperature of the cage.
