Cool Keeping your hamster cool

As the UK weather is hotting up at the moment, I thought it would be good to have all the tips for keeping your hamster cool in one place.

Feel free to add more to this thread!
  • Make sure no hamster homes are in direct sunlight.
  • Try to make sure the room is cool, you could put a fan in for air flow (but not pointed right at the homes) If the room is too hot for you, it's most likely too hot for the hamster!
  • You can put cold packs next to the outside of a cage where it cannot be chewed, just on one side so the hamster can go near it if they want.
  • You can put ice cubes in front of a fan or near a cage to help cool the air.
  • Small plastic drinks bottles can be 3/4 filled with water, then chilled in a fridge or frozen in a freezer then either placed outside like a cool pack, or inside the hamster home wrapped up in a bit of loo roll ( so the hamster doesn't hurt itself on the cold (really important if frozen!).
  • Mugs, saucers or even tiles can be chilled in a fridge then placed into the hamster home, giving something they can lean against, go in, or lie on if they want. You could try to order some free tile samples, or get some marble coasters.

Remember not to go too far, only put a cooling thing in one spot of a home so the hamster can get away from it if it wishes.

If your hamster looks ill, do call a vet to get advice/an appointment.

An ice cube in the water bottle is always appreciated by Percy! Stone can also be put in the fridge.

Is there a way of keeping the cups colder for longer? Sweep's was in the fridge all day and I gave it to him, only for it to go warm within a few minutes!

Yes that is a bit of a problem but ceramic or terracotta is a cool kind of material anyway.

I am very sensitive to humid and hot weather, and it's already getting very warm where I live. I use my air conditioning because when it's like this I get migraines and flare ups of my chronic illness. If the a/c is on, the hamsters will probably be fine, too, right? I also plan on giving them more ceramic and terracotta items, and they have some stones in their cages already, but I'm hoping since I run my a/c, the house, including their room, should stay comfortable.

Lightbulb Keeping Your Hammy Cool In Summer

First off, I am aware that there is a similar thread to this, but I wanted to go over things or share some new ideas

1. A frozen waterbottle near their bed.
I don't recommend using this tip for wild chewers. (From the plastic) But this is a good way to keep them cool while they sleep. Don't put it too close to them as it might scare them.

2. Ice cubes in their waterbottle!
I do this all the time when its hot. However, its hard to fit the icecubes in, so I break them up and put them in. It should stay frozen for a couple of hours. Make sure no icecubes are too big, if they are it shouldn't be to much of a problem but its not great to swallow them, since they are so small.

3. A cool-off zone
I use like a ceramic toy or bowl, you can use clean rocks/stones for this but I don't, anyway, to get the ceramic cool, I put it in the freezer for a couple of hours, then put it in the cage and they can sit/lay on the cold ceramic or stone. If you use stone, its great to cut-down their nails!

4. Refreshing waterbottle everyday
Some people do this all the time anyway, but I tend to only do it once or twice a week. Anyway, when the weather is hot, I empty and refill everyday to keep it fresh and cold.

5. A cool sand bath
For their sand bath, I put It in the fridge for a few hours. Meaning when they roll around, its nice and cool. Too make sure its not too cold, leave it out in the shade for about 15-30 minutes, but that's mainly if you feel its really cold.

That's all I have, feel free to share more ideas in the comments.

I keep my hamsters in our basement and use ceramic tiles and bricks in my habitats, so I go with the "cool-off zone." Sand baths are great too!

Another thing is to make sure there is good air circulation during hot weather. A fan and a wet towel can go a long way!
