The Detolf would be a really good idea! It's over half a square meter but still a great price, and also can have a lot more substrate than barred cages. As long as you set it up with lots of hiding spaces and tons of substrate it really shouldn't be a problem to go big,but you could also set up a divider in the cage at first and gradually move the divider over time until the whole Detolf is able to be used.

Thanks I don't really have room for the Detolf, and I also prefer barred cages - he loves to sit up and poke his nose out !

About how large could you possibly go?I know there are barred cages that are 100 x 50 so it would be less length but more width than a Detolf,so it might be easier to get a 100 x 50 barred cage.

It doesn't have to be specifically for hamsters, you can usually find guinea pig cages and rabbit cages that are 100 x 50(not large enough for rabbits or guinea pigs though)for really good price and all you'd have to do is mesh over the wire bits.
