Default I can't believe what I got for free!

I decided to look at gumtree for a larger cage for my daughters hamster. I was amazed to see a very large cage (barney cage I think) being offered for free. I emailed and was told I could collect it! There was also free bedding, sawdust, platforms, sand bath, chinchilla sand, bendy bridges. The lady didn't ask for anything for it. Anyway I emailed her to thank her and I also sent her some money as it was such a generous freebie! Elliot is settling in and seems shocked by the space!

Oh my that is an amazing deal! Prime example of why you should always trawl second hand website because you never know what will pop up

I bet little Elliot will settle in soon, Willow seemed quite overwhelmed with her 100cm cage at first but she loves it now!

Thank you. I am so pleased as was going to buy a new one as clearly the one pets at home sold was far too small.

Awesome!

Were the things used? If so, it may be worth sanitising the bendy bridges (I'm guessing you disinfected the cage anyway ). You can do this by baking them for around 25 minutes at a high temperature as heat kills off parasites and scents from other animals

Excellent. Sometimes if people are moving house and need to shift things in a hurry they give all sorts away! I think I would still use new substrate, bedding and sand possibly and at least pop the wood items in the freezer for a couple of days - it's nice they had already been done, but it's best to be on the safe side. Ceramic things can just be washed in soapy water.

You can also freeze paper bedding for a couple of days Believe me things can start living in bedding depending where it's been stored! Not sure if you can freeze shavings (I guess you mean shavings when you say sawdust) but they should be ok unless they smell damp or very strongly of pine.

Lucky hammy getting a Barney cage!

That is an awesome free hammy haul.
How lovely of you to send her some funds.
I'm sure she appreciated the gesture.
There are certainly some good bargains to be found second hand.
