I think that most pet shops are interested in selling the wheels, etc and are not too worried about sizes. Look at the cages they sell ... hardly 100 x 50cm ...

That is true, their cages are tiny the wheel almost fills up the width of it! At the store the cages are absolutely tiny, not even 100x 50 , they look 50x 20 or 30!
