New hamster behaviour
I had a very exciting day yesterday - after weeks of planning I bought my first hamster! He's a Syrian called Arthur.
I'm really interested to know how other hamster behave during their first few days/weeks. What are your experiences?
Arthur's tried out his tunnels and wheel, chewed on a gnawing stick and eaten some food and treats. Mostly he's been digging though! He hasn't slept in his house but buried himself in the substrate (it's about 4 inches thick).

Re: New hamster behaviour
Sounds like he is building his first nest in the cage! Very cute picture! My experiences are varied some of my hammies were tame when we first got them however some were quite nervous. Remember don't disturb them for a few days, how long have you had him? Also if you are going to start to tame him do it soon but not in the first few days as Arthur will be getting used to his new home.

Re: New hamster behaviour
I've also had varied experiences from my hammies, the last one i had didn't have a problem settling in at all and spent a lot of time in the first few days exploring and playing in his cage. The two I have just now couldn't be more different. Lilo is a little shy and just likes to watch what is going on around her will come out for the occasional look about whilst getting something to eat and something to drink but her sister Stitch is the opposite. She prefers to be very active and come out to see whats going on.

Arthur is so sweet! My Sweep spent most of his first week digging too. He still digs now, but not like he did then!

Re: New hamster behaviour
A lot of hamsters are busy exploring a new cage for a few days then settle into a routine and sleep/hide away.
