Default Hamster excercise ball accidents

As some people are against the use of exercise balls. I thought I would see how may people have actually had a hamster injure themselves due to using an excercise ball.

Yes or no answer to the poll and comments will be useful.

I have never had a hamster get injured using a hamster ball.

I wouldn't say I'm against using balls, because lots of hammies do actually enjoy them! However, I'd be cautious when introducing a hamster to a ball for the first time, as they could be injured.

Just like roller coasters...some people like them, and some don't.

I start at just letting them go in and out of the ball. Then let them run in it for 5 minutes then gradually build up the time to 20 minutes. Every 20 minutes they get the chance to come out. They more often chose to stay in the ball unless the needed to go to the toilet, have a drink or get some food. Once they had done this they would wait by the cage door to come out again.

Ive never had a hamster be injured by using a ball but then I have very rarely used them (My last 3 Syrians didn't have one). I just don't think the hamster gets to interact with the world properly so much prefer a playpen.

Every hammie I have has liked their exercise outside of Latte, she went in her mini ball 2x's then she didn't want to anymore. But it didn't make her skittish or anything, I just stopped offering it to her. I haven't introduced the ball to Madison yet, I'm thinking that it's not going to be a hit with her either so I probably won't offer it to her.

Chloe will go into the ball every single time. My Bears go in sometimes, but I've never had a ham get injured. They need to be monitored though as they can stuck sometimes while running around in various places. The whole ball gets stuck in between furniture.

My guys love their ball, which they share, and its a really useful way of them getting a good run. I think they can be left in them which I suspect is part of the issue?
When I rehome I always tell people to use them but to keep an eye and not for too long.
And to tape the lids especially for female Syrians! The monkeys.

Its interesting seeing just how many people on here have never had a hamster injured, yet many users don't use hamster balls. Great to see that we are all just too protective of our little hams to risk it!

Pizca only spent five minutes in the ball from time to time. The little evil fluff discovered soon that she can open the ball if she hits it against the wall!
Edit: my awful english, sorry

I haven't voted as I wasn't sure on which to go for as one of mine could have been injured in her exercise ball if I hadn't have been watching her so carefully.

I used to use the dwarf sized ones occasionally for my Chineseys up until early last year but I noticed that May's foot had become caught in one of the ventilation holes. Thankfully I was able to free her easily without any injuries but had she have not been supervised as fully as she was, there probably was the potential for her to have been hurt.

Since then I've not used them for Chineseys and prefer to give mine a playpen/playbox with toys to explore instead. I know many people have used them for years and their hamsters have enjoyed them, had I have had Syrians instead of Chinese, I'd probably be more willing to use one occasionally.

Personally I believe it depends on the hamster's personality. I don't mind using them, but I only use them if the hamster wants to and willingly climbs into it.

My mums hamster Rusty absolutely loves his ball and spends 30-45minutes in it every night, whereas Willow absolutely despises it and will run to the other end of the cage if she sees it so of course she doesn't go in it.

When choosing a ball for a dwarf or Chinese hamsters you have to be cautious about the size of the ventilation slits and their tiny feet! Because of this there are only certain balls you can use for them and most prefer a playpen anyway

So, as long as you choose the right ball and your hamster isn't hesitant to go in it, I don't see why injuries should occur at all
