The funny thing was that they were the same balls that I'd used for my first three Chineseys and had never had an issue with them other than the doors being easy to open. Maybe May just had particularly tiny feet.

I think we are all careful hamster owners. The danger is when people aren't responsible enough with them, leave hamsters unsupervised where the ball can fall downstairs or something, or leave them in it for far too long. I think that's my main reservation about their existence. They can be very useful though! Great way to transport a hamster safely from one room to another (ie carrying them in it).

Also, have to be careful that you don't forget they are in the ball if you let them roam around the house/apartment where there isn't any stairs. If your on a phone call or cleaning, etc. remember your hamster who is roaming a different room out of sight.

I have this with my Robos One of them is absolutely fine in a hamster ball, the other (the female, and she is a lot smaller than my boy) I noticed the first time I put her in it that her feet are small enough to fall through the ventilation slots! (It is a "hamster" ball rather than a dwarf one though, dwarf ones have smaller ventilation slots.) Though the Robos aren't particularly keen on balls anyway, the girl hasn't been in one since that first time and the boy only ever goes in when his cage is getting cleaned out, because it's either that or put him in a carrier and he likes that even less.

The Syrians on the other hand love their balls, will actually still roll around in their balls even if I've left the door off and have never got injured from it

Both of our Hamsters have enjoyed their play balls both have discovered how to open the darned things, Forrest used to race his as fast as possible into a wall or door to smash the door open, then he discovered how to twist the door open by wedging the ball into a corner some where.
Pip has discovered the same trick wedge in corner and attack the door from the inside, I only realised she did it the first time when I looked up from the lap top to see her sitting in the middle of the floor washing herself..!
Pip comes to the door of her cage for "Ball time" and she will happily run about the house for hours often leaving a little trail of hamster poo's about the place and she hates being put back in her cage..

One of my Syrian hamsters died after falling down a flight of stairs which happened when I was a teenager.

I think size plays a factor as well as personality. Making sure the ball isn't too big for them to build up too much momentum but also doesn't cause arching is possibly part of the factors.
