My hammys been sleeping under a piece of toilet paper!
I put a piece of toilet paper on top of Arlo's wheel last night to see if he'd used it. He hadn't but I knocked the paper off when doing the food this morning and left it in there and he's adopted it as his new bed ! How cute. My hubby and the kids had him out playing this afternoon and now he's flaked out like this!

Lol! It must be a nice little tent. I only usually put a tiny piece of substrate on top of the wheel ha ha. Hope you don't mind me making a suggestion, but looking at the photo you could maybe put quite a bit more depth of substrate in - you can see the cage base in places. Hammies like to dig and burrow under it for cover sometimes.

thanks serendipity, I did have it fairly high but he shovels it away and burrows into the corners ! ITs been warm here and he seems to like laying against the bottom?! How high would you suggest though?

Re: My hammys been sleeping under a piece of toilet paper!
Oh good point - maybe he's looking for somewhere cool. Actually our hammy did that once - he dragged loads of substrate inside his house leaving a bare patch right down to the cage base lol. I think 3 to 4" minimum depth is recommended but obviously hams can move this around ha ha. I put about 6" in but my cage has narrow bar spacing so it doesn't fall out. 4" would be about right probably.
They do have some funny little habits. It could be an idea to pop a shoe box or small cardboard box in open to the substrate at the bottom, with a hole cut in for a door then he has somewhere dark to go if he wants and might nest in there - but you never know maybe he likes sleeping in a tent lol.
That does look like a silent spinner - and plenty of people have had problems with them in the last year!

I'm impressed you recongnise a wheel from a tiny bit of it in a photo!
You've been really helpful answering all my different questions on here, thank you! I'm such a novice but really loving learning about it all, who knew hamsters could be so fascinating!

Re: My hammys been sleeping under a piece of toilet paper!
They are fascinating But I confess I know very little about dwarf hamster habits - we just have a Syrian. Lol I'm developing a wheel fetish ha ha. I did a thread on wheels available if it helps. The first section is on Syrian wheels and below that is a section on dwarf hamster wheels. I learned so much on here, tips from people and trial and error.

Re: My hammys been sleeping under a piece of toilet paper!
I have a pair of campbells at the moment and they are too lazy to rip up their paper to use as bedding and just hide under it. It looks odd as they have a layer of sand, then them and then a bit of paper on top of them (They have decided to sleep in their sand bath)

Yes he hasn't bothered to rip it- he seems to just like something over him, but as its quite warm here the toilet paper is perfect without making him hot!
