I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
Just had a poke around Arlo's cage and I can't work out where he's doing his wee's! I can smell wee and was hoping he might have a certain place he but I can't seem to find it. How am I meant to spot cleanif he piddles anywhere?!

i would layer the top bit of bedding with some ripped up toilet paper, that way if your hamster wants he can use it for a nest and also can help to see where hes peeing

Re: I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
Thanks for the replies. He's got quite a bit of care fresh bedding in there and has a nest , but when I lifted things and looked in the corners I can't see pee anywhere, I presume it would make the substrate yellow? I thought he would pee in the same place but maybe he's doing it all over. Does hamster pee look yellow?!
(sorry , I saw both of you who replied are from the US and wondered if my use of the word 'wee's' and 'piddles' were confusing lol. I just meant pee) !

Re: I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
Pip uses a sand bath as a toilet for her widdles, it keeps her cage very clean indeed, I find with the carefresh substrate the Poo's work their way through to the floor of the cage which makes spot cleaning a whole lot easier..

Have you checked his nest?
I find that when Sweep pees in his bed I can only smell it! The bedding and substrate are not wet and they haven't changed color so it confuses me!

Re: I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
He's very new & you just changed his cage so he probably is peeing all over just to make it his!
Russians really don't pee a lot so you may not find anything for a little while yet, he should settle on one spot once he's settled into the cage so I wouldn't keep hunting for it & messing with the substrate just yet.
Did you put the sand bath or litter tray with chinchilla sand in yet (sorry I can't remember) if you put it near the house they almost always use it after a short while.
Is he peeing in his wheel? They often do & that's usually what you can smell, if it is don't over clean it though or he'll just do it more! At most a wipe with a damp paper towel & a proper wash once a week will do.

Re: I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
Cypher yes I put the sand he, he loves to roll in it. He's not been peeing in his wheel , but like you say the cage change is probably making him mark his territory.
I'm going to keep out of his cage now to let him settle in properly so will have another look in a few days. x

Re: I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
I shouldn't worry about it If you can't smell it then it's not really necessary to spot clean it. If it starts to get whiffy it may be more obvious where it's coming from. They don't do very big pees. He could be peeing in the sand and then digging sand over it to cover it. They are quite clean really (Although we have a Syrian rather than a dwarf so a bit different). Charlie always covers up his wee with a bit of substrate lol - very neat and tidy he is.

Re: I can't work out where he's going to toilet!
yes, just saw this thread again, and I should have said that I use the white because it shows up the yellow urine stains. I do believe that a sand bath near his house is an excellent idea as my WW immediately started using it as a potty. Will save me money on bedding now I wouldn't be surprised if my other dwarves don't use the sand bath as a potty on occasion too because the urine evaporates in the chinchilla sand after it dries. All my hamsters are due for a cage clean but after I put those sand baths in their cages don't need cleaning much.
