Exclamation Bugs

ok so recently in milos sand area there have been bugs like little silver fish and of course i take them out and kill them on sight and then switch the sand but has anyone else had a problem with bugs entering the cage and if so how to deal with them. They completely gross me out and id hate for them to be in his cage as I dont want milo to get sick or anything.

Maybe they are silverfish - or do they look more like little maggots? They could easily get into the cage - we used to find them a lot in my Grandma's house wriggling along the carpet at night sometimes.

So if you clean out the sand and put new in they still come back? They must like sand! What sand are you using? I don't think Silverfish do any harm - it might be a nice snack!

Apparently spiders eat silverfish but that's probably not much help! They like damp paper and there is a silverfish trap suggestion of damping a rolled up newspaper tying it up with string so it stays rolled up, which they will go into and snack on overnight then you can chuck the rolled newspaper in the wheely bin outside. Maybe you could set it up next to the hamster cage but not so your hammy can get at the newspaper.

That's if they are silverfish.

What kind of sand is it? Do you think they are in the sand or attracted to it? You could try freezing the sand, or I think some people bake it to sterilise it. Or just get a new batch if the bugs have laid eggs it it and are hatching, maybe from a different source! Like Serendipity said probably no hamster harm, they like a nice bug snack, but you don't want them in your house.

well we have silverfish, like they have always been a problem throughout my house and my friends tell me they have them too, im sure it is silver fish. The sand I use is the chinchilla sand that comes in a box, kinda forgot the name lol but i've seen people use it here on hc. Anyways good to know that silverfish dont harm hamsters but its still kinda gross to think of.

I don't think they're from the sand. Lots of old houses get silverfish - you could try the damp newspaper trap to keep them out of the sand

ill give it a try but im not sure how it would work as milos cage is on top of one of my dressers so its pretty high up and next to my bed, im just very confused as how silverfish even got in the cage and it makes me wonder if there are some in the bedding, and now thinking of this is starting to gross me oh my lol, i probably sound so silly lol

It does tend to put the imagination into overdrive lol. What kind of substrate does Milo have? They can easily get up there from the floor. Maybe put the damp rolled up newspaper on the floor next to the chest.

Or you could try one of this non toxic traps on the floor next to the chest of drawers - it'll attract them in over a few days probably. A bit gross but might do the trick

The trap might work but I would have thought damp newspaper would just encourage more of them into the general area & they'd probably continue to go into the cage, they can be a nightmare to get rid of I know having had problems with them a few times in the past.
I'm surprised they're in the sand unless they got in there & couldn't get out easily.
I'm not sure what but I think you need to try & put something around the whole cage to try to deter them, can't think of anything they don't like off hand though!

I was just looking at Milo's thread To see your cage set up but couldn't see the sand area. It's a glass tank so it does seem strange they are in there. Piebald could have a point there - they could have hatched in the sand maybe. Which type of sand did you get? If it's children's play sand it needs baking to sterilise it before use.
