Flying saucer hamster wheels
Ive not been around for a while as been busy with many other commitments and so not had time for posting. I do have question though.
We have bought these for our hams, and they seem to spin at great speed. I am a little worried that if one of them fall off if they stop suddenly they may hurt themselves. Does anyone know if they're safe?

Re: Flying saucer hamster wheels
They might fall off, plus the flying saucer wheels bring the added issue of being an unnatural design that causes side arching which is not exactly ideal. You want an upright wheel that is the right size for your species though, like the Wodent Wheel or Silent Runner and size depends entirely on species and the size of an individual hamster but it is certainly better to have an upright wheel that is actually appropriate.

Re: Flying saucer hamster wheels
I have about 20 hams that have both the wheel and saucer, they all love them. As long as the saucer fits them correctly they will not arch their back. If you try to put a syrian on a medium one they will arch their backs which is not good, the need the large size. Just watch and make sure they are running comfortably. The problems I have had are 1. they take up A LOT of room and 2. Eventually the plastic ones wear down, especially with chunkier hamster. They get to the point where the saucer rubs on the stand and will barely move or not move at all. I highly recommend the metal saucers

Re: Flying saucer hamster wheels
The original idea was to try and remove some of the noise element and as they had had mainly good reviews on Zooplus (Still not got to the bottom of the Zooplus issues - those who read my previous post about zooplus).
I think we'll give them another week with close supervision. They do enjoy but Bobbi often stops mid run and lets the wheel spin her.

Re: Flying saucer hamster wheels
You always need a size up from what they are designed for. The small ones aren't any use for any hamster, medium ones are ok for dwarf hamsters and large (rat sized ones) are good for syrians. Any smaller and they will be running unnaturally. My dwarf tried out the rat one and ran so fast when she stopped went flying so I wouldn't recommend getting one too big either. Wheels are safer and if you get a good one can be very quiet. I find the flying saucers quite noisy

Re: Flying saucer hamster wheels
We went for the biggest we could find and they're only noisy when they hit the wall of the cage. So quite successful on that front just worried not as safe as originally told.
Does anyone know how with traditional wheel to stop the squeaking noise?

Re: Flying saucer hamster wheels
Vegetable oil or baby oil stops my Wodent Wheels from squeaking, used with a Q-tip.
I have the medium flying saucers in my robos cages and they love them. They also have stand up wheels. They do fly off them at times, but they get right back up and look like they are having a great time. They fall into soft bedding so it's not a problem.
I've also had Russian dwarves use the wheel and they seem to really like it too. I think the stand up wheels should be the primary wheel if at all possible
