Default Transporting new hamster

Hello all. I'll be making a trip to a breeder in about a week to bring home our new hamster. I have a small travel cage that allows room for some bedding and a cardboard tube. It's about a two hour trip - do I need to provide something for hydration for a trip of that length? Not sure if the hamster will have gotten fresh veggies before so would cucumber be safe?

You could give a big chunk of cucumber for the hamster, I think she'll be fine without food for 2 hours They should have got fresh veggies if they're from a breeder, If not then I don't think I'd trust the breeder personally.

Cucumber would be fine and a good idea When we took our hammy in the car I sat with the pet carrier on my knee, holding onto it, with a blanket over the top so flashes of sunlight etc and cars didn't bother him. I would put as much bedding as you can in and maybe hide some treats or bits of food in the bedding which should occupy him. A small house could be good rather than a tube maybe (ie small cardboard box with a hole cut in?). Our hammy goes in the little house and builds a nest in there when he's in his pet carrier, and I think they feel a bit safer in a house. But it depends how big or small your pet carrier is I guess.

Or something like this - normally that would be a bit small for a Syrian but if it's on top of substrate/bedding it'd be fine. Or a little hide from your cage or something

Exciting! Looking forward to meeting your new hammy

Thank you for the tips! The breeder is actually active on this forum, and seems like a wonderful breeder. So most likely the hamster has been given fresh food if that is common practice for breeders. Looking forward to bringing our new friend home!
