Congrats on Ambrose who's so cute!
I prefer to keep the cage on a table/unit.

Thanks! ^_^

I'm gonna have to order a coffee table for it, since the bin cage will be too big for anything we currently have.

I know the struggle of finding furniture to put a cage on all too well!Of course, you'd probably have better luck than me since my cage is going to be such a weird combination of measurements.

Yeah, but coffee tables are expensive. :P It's tough not having a car. You either have to order stuff online or pay extra to have the shop deliver it if it's too big to carry home on foot.

Update on Ambrose: He's a very good eater. He likes his mealworms, sunflower seeds, and even the little bit of bok choy I gave him today. He's such a good eater, in fact, that he seems to have decided that I am food, and I have received my first hamster bites. :P

He's super outgoing though. He seems ready to skip most of the taming process, as he climbed all over my hand when I was handing him a sunflower seed today. As soon as I get a playpen made up I'll try him in it.

Coffee tables and dining tables are about equal in cost if not dining tables being more expensive sometimes. It is a major pain having to get them though, and having no car would make it near impossible to get a used one unless you were very lucky with a website of some sort

Okay, he probably bit me because my hand smelled like sunflower seeds. :P I'd just given him one.

I'm thinking of putting his bin cage in my bedroom, rather than the living room where he is now. Initially, I thought he would need to be in the living room since I'm a light sleeper, but I actually sleep in a loft above my bedroom that has windows to the living room so I can hear him anyway, and I haven't had any problems sleeping. So I was thinking he might be better off in my bedroom because A. It's quieter than the living room, which we have to pass through to get to my bedroom and the kitchen, to which it is connected B. I can more easily control the temperature in here since I'm in here all the time anyway. and C. I like having him close by.

Do you guys think that's a good idea?

Hmm, I didn't look at dining tables. I'll give them a quick peek, although I think I already found a coffee table to get on Amazon.

And yeah, there's so much great furniture on the Tokyo craigslist. There are always foreigners who are like "I have to leave the country in 3 days you can have this huge, brand new fridge, 3 person couch, and flatscreen TV if you just come and take them!" and I can't come and take them. It's so sad.

Had a fun little experience with Ambrose tonight.

I had handed him a sunflower seed and then when I reached past him to put his bok choy and tofu into his bowl he dropped the sunflower seed and took the bok choy from my hand. So I sat an watched him, not bothering to shut the cage door since he's never tried to make a dash for it while he's eating. When he was done he stretched so he was sticking out the door a little bit and I put my hand down in front of him and he climbed right on! We did that thing where he goes from hand to hand like a treadmill for several seconds, and then, since I hadn't moved my hands from right in front of the cage door, he just stepped right off my hands back into his cage and that was that.

He was so squirmy when we first got him, I thought he would be trying to escape all the time. But since he's been in his little cage he's been totally fine! I usually leave the cage door open for a few minutes after giving him fresh food so I can watch him eat without the bars getting in the way. He gets completely distracted by food (he went for the tofu after the bok choy and the sunflower seed is still lying there forgotten).

I'm thinking I may go for paper substrate once I've used up our current wood shavings though, because he was scratching himself quite a lot and I'm worried he'll end up with mites.

Do you have an Ikea nearby? You can get a Lack side table for £5 Or the bigger one for £14 - choose your colour!

LACK Side table - white - IKEA

It could be the wood shavings that are causing the itching - hammies can be allergic to any kind of wood (so can humans).

I have Woodstock's cage on two identical storage boxes. Works really well. Could be a cheaper option for you perhaps?
