I feel that I should have clarified that I am at university and I am currently renting a room in student accommodation. The size of the room is really small, there's just enough room for me to walk around the bed let alone store anything. And what storage I do have I have to prioritise for my art supplies (Pencils, Pens, Paints, Sketchbooks, theory books, inks, etc) as I'm doing an illustration degree.

Donny's cage as it is takes up the window ledge. And I've already been wanting to modify it too, as I do not like the orange barred shelf because it's bending in the middle and doesn't allow Donny to optimum space to wander up top. (Thinking about getting a panel of wood to measurement and cutting a hole in one bit for his tunnel to fit in making a connection between top and bottom areas.)

I've tried electrical tape on his ball and he still manages to get out of it and go running for under the bed. I can't risk him doing that because he will likely cause damages to the room with chewing that I'll be fined for.

I did mention before that maybe in September It may be better. I'm moving across to another building and getting a bigger room. (And a bigger desk for myself, thank god) but an idea of a harness would make a okay, temporary solution to my problem for the months till then.

It would also let me feel a bit more relaxed with Donny when he walks around on my bed. He has a habit of making a bee-line without hesitation for the gap between the wall and bed.

Lastly maybe I should have specified the type of harness? I know there's the ones which it's all just one string which loops around twice (which I agree looks rather sketchy.) But a vest harness looks a lot more safer and comfortable to me.

(Plus purple is Donny's colour. Bonus points to whoever guesses the reason why.)

(Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of course I was thinking so before that was said actually.)

I don't think a harness is the solution to the actual problem. The problem here is finding a way to block off something or even perhaps create a small play pen or maybe even do play bin that doubles as a storage container when not in use.A harness is far too dangerous to be worth the single benefit

Heh, maybe he escapes all the time because I named him after a ninja.

Probably Just take it as your hamster probably doesn't like balls that much and because of that balls aren't a good option so alternatives are necessary,at least for now,and consider some other alternatives that are a lot more cost effective and easier to manage.

Not sure how large your bed is, I have a queen, but maybe something like this? Amazon.com: Mudder Kids Play Tent Playpen Ball Pit Pool with Red Zippered Storage Bag for Toddlers, Pets (Balls not Included): Toys & Games. I wouldn't use it without supervision of course, but It's about 3ft in diameter, though you could adjust it to fit the size of the space you need. I like the /idea/ of a harness, but I'm also worried about the safety of one, (though now that you say he's named after a Ninja I'm picturing him using it to repel down the side of the bed and go cave exploring under the bed that way.) The nice thing is it twists up and stores real easy. and when folded is about eight inches in diameter and less than half an inch wide.

I think the ball pit is a really good idea, and there are definitely other styles to go for if that one isn't suitable!Something along the lines of a child's ball pit or a DIY mesh and safe wood playpen or even cardboard or corrugated plastic would be a great idea, since there are of course safety hazards with free roaming.

One idea I have is that if you were to build a pen with wood and mesh to make it escape proof you could just have an added lid on top which wouldn't be that difficult to attach and build if you're interested in that style of playpen.Kind of like a rabbit run but smaller spacing and a smaller size overall!

Serendipity did a really good youtube video on making your own playpen, it dismantled really easily so you could store it under your bed or in the wardrobe without much difficulty, you could put an old towel on the floor underneath it to protect the carpet too. With something like this you could make it as big or as small as you can fit.

(Sorry couldn't resist the reaction image. )

Not too sure where exactly I'd get Coroplast/Correx from without ordering it online, but it did solve the mystery as to what I used as a flat surface in Donny's cage so he wasn't running over bars all the time. And coincidentally I have a lot of bulldog clips left over from a Uni project.

It did make me think though that maybe A2 sheets of Foam Board (£3 each I know from Hobbycraft) may work just as well as it's thick sturdy and light. And I can easily cut slots into it so I can slide the panels together when needed then un-slot them when done.

And the size of the bed I've been given is a 3/4, so I guess the panels could slide under that when done.

Don't mind at all Alfie! It sounds like space for the playpen is an issue though. Lizwig is there anywhere else you could put his cage? I'm just thinking the window sill isn't a great place for it, even if it's double-glazed and not draughty, as it's very light there, movement and noise from outside and possibly getting too hot from the sun? Unless it's a window that doesn't get any sun maybe.

A few cage changes would be a good idea as well The shelf has metal bars I think which are bad for hammies feet, and can cause a condition called bumblefoot which is very painful and needs vet treatment, so covering them with a piece of cardboard would be a good idea (sorry if you already have, I can't tell from the pic). I'd also take the runged ladder out - he could get his feet trapped (especially as he gets older) - he can still get up and down via the tubes.

The cage is a bit on the small side really, but with a few changes it would be a bit safer for him Is there any chance of putting something else on the window sill (ie using it as a book shelf or boxes for storing other things) and having your hammy cage somewhere else in the room?

As for the harness - I really liked the idea too when I first saw them but they're really not safe or suitable for hamsters (sadly many products labelled 'hamster' are totally unsafe!) and to be honest I think he'd escape it even easier than a ball.

Does he seem to like his hamster ball? I'm not a big fan of them but sometimes a 10 to 15 minute run in one is ok if the hamster chooses to jump into the ball and seems to like it. But best not to leave him in it any longer than 15 minutes at a time (sorry if you already know this). Which ball do you have? I've had two. The first one was great - but a bit small for our syrian (unfortunately most of the balls are a bit small for syrians and they start finding it uncomfortable to run in them) - it was a complete piece rather than two halves that clipped together and the lid was quite secure although could pop off if he knocked into something on rare occasions. But yes they are good at working out how to get the lid off! Which suggests to me he wants out of it.

I like the idea of setting up a playpen area on your bed. Is your hammy quite tame? ie can you pick him up and hold him fairly easily and him not rush around or be difficult to pick up?

Either way you could try him on top of your bed with blockages round the edges. Ours is tame enough I can manage him on the bed with just a blanket or two piled up at the edges for blockages, and pick him up if he tries to climb over them, but if he's a running away quickly type then something sturdier would be needed to block the edges.

I have one of these cardboard castles that we put on top of the bed sometimes. It can be climbed over the top off if they try, but as long as he is handleable you can pop him back in again and still have a blanket blocking the edge of the bed as a second line of defence! I found if I left one of the centre sections out and put a few toys in and hid a few treats our hammy was less interested in escaping from it. But ultimately they want to have a good run around somewhere and not feel so closed in.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Supreme-Ham...rdboard+castle

We can't let ours free roam in the room either - too many little nooks and crannies and a gas fire and too many things to try and block off without moving out of the room! If out of cage time is tricky it can work better just to have a cage with a bigger floor area so they have more enrichment in the cage, if that's possible at all. Something like the Alaska cage from Zooplus. It isn't too expensive and costs approx £32. It also has a big front opening door so it's easy to access your hammy

I wouldn't get the harness though. I think it would really stress your hammy and she'd be out of it in no time and probably try and chew it to pieces.
