Question Thoughts on Hamster Harnesses?

Pretty much as the title says, does anyone have any thoughts on using harnesses and leashes on hamsters?

It has currently become a possibility for me in order to allow Donny to have a run around outside of his cage(s) without the use of a ball, because Donny has become an escape artist with the ball and no matter what I do he still gets out of it.

I personally say they are not safe, as most harnesses goes around the hamsters neck and behind their front arm which can be dangerous especially if they try to run and you are holding the other end, and this could result in injuries. So I wouldn't take the risk. If you want him to run around outside of his cage whilst being supervised a playpen (ideally with a lid or high sided is best for a Syrian) would be the safest option.

I've been wanting to get him a playpen but I just don't have the room to even set it up let alone store it when not in use. Things may chance come September though but I'm not sure at the moment.

I agree with skb. The only animal that i would use a harness for is a dog.

I have a metal folding playpen which are fairly easy to store as it takes up hardly any room also you can make it into smaller shapes I.e. A long rectangle, and I have mesh in which I can place on top and attach in place to prevent any escapes.

If you made a playpen out of cardboard you could decide the size and shape yourself and then it would fold up completely when not in use.

Or a horse! But yes, I agree. Those harnesses look odd and could be dangerous. Also a hamster is so tiny and would likely wriggle whilst you were trying to get the harness on. I personally wouldn't even put a harness on a rabbit!

People have had issues with harnesses even on larger animals,so why risk it on a tiny creature that does perfectly fine indoors in a playpen or free roaming in a room?If all the risks outweigh the benefits,it isn't worth it.I have seen so many Asian hamster harnesses and yes they are cute but no they are not in any way humane or safe, nor is any hamster harness in any country appropriate, humane,or safe for a hamster.

Sorry don't know your full story but can you let him just roam round your room? I have always let mine have free run of the room in the evenings, my first hamster in my uni room and my current hamster in my living room. As long as there are no holes in the wall (pipes etc) its fine, they might disappear under furniture at times but in my experience they always come out again They really enjoy exploring the room and its nicer than being trapped in a ball, especially if you can arrange it so they can get in and out of the cage when they want.

Forrest our ex hamster used to get out of his ball with alarming regularity, until I put some electrical tape on the 'door' which was strong enough to stop him opening the door but was reuseable..
