Free play
I'm not entirely sure I can do this here, as it's not my house (and there's a C-A-T), but would like to know for future reference ... How do you hamster proof a room so they can play freely?

Re: Free play
I would ensure that there is nothing for your hamster can chew such as wires, fabric, furniture (which you don't want chewed), nothing in which your hamster can get stuck in such as furniture (so your hamster can't climb inside and you will find it difficult to get out. Also make sure there is no door in which anyone can come in at could hit your hamster.
I divide my bedroom in half with a playpen so Sherbet has the safe part of my room. Where Sherbet pees when she is out I've cut a cardboard box so she can pee inside that and not on my carpet. Also areas in which she chews the carpet I've put cardboard so she can't. I've also used extendable tunnel behind a storage box with her toys in (but you could do that behind a piece of furniture).
Also I have a small table that I've put some toys, chews and cardboard boxes beneath for her to play in.
Also my hamster likes me to sit with her when she has her free play as otherwise she will climb over the playpen divider to find me, So Sweep might like you to sit with him if he having free play time.

Re: Free play
I too normally divide off some of my bedroom. I put a few hidey houses, his food bowl and a bit of cucumber in the area. Make sure as SKB said that there is no wires, fabric, furniture and I would hoover the area or put a blanket or cardboard to make sure there are no crumbs etc. Also to protect from accidents lol. Percy will stay out for up to two hours, depending on the day. They really love it.

Re: Free play
Was thinking of using the bathroom when everyone else in in bed? I could block off the bottom of the door with a towel so he couldn't get under there. I've taken a look and there doesn't seem to be any holes anywhere ...

Re: Free play
I wouldn't allow your hamster to free roam in a bathroom as you don't know whether there is any cleaning chemicals on the floor which can be unsafe for hamsters. Could you corner of a part of a room and supervise so he can't chew anything

Re: Free play
I'm new to hamsters ( had years of rat owning) but I've learnt quickly never underestimate a hamster! If he can squeeze under a door a towel won't stop him, he will simple dig it out the way, best to put heavy books instead, this works for my Pandora and she's a very determined little character!
Also I say with exercise trust you hamster, they are not stupid, far from it. They can self preserve, As long as there's no live cables and you are careful where you tred etc all be fine. Just supervise and he will have a great time I'm sure.

Re: Free play
I found an unexpected hole in the base/stand of the toilet in my bathroom. I thought the base was solid.
I couldn't see the hole but felt it. It was large enough for a hamster to get through and would have lead under the floor.
May be worth checking yours.

Re: Free play
Check for holes where all the pipework for bath, basin and toilet comes in. Hamsters are as others have said, very good ar squeezing through th most incredibly tiny gaps.
The bath makes a good play area with the plug hole blocked off and a few toys.

Maybe set up a playpen on the spare bed. You could sit in the playpen or outside the playpen depending on the size.
