2 new hamsters!!
Woooo! Someone on facebook offered me two hamsters yesterday in cage, she was unsure of the breed and they are a few months old! she wasn't replying to my messages yesterday so i thought she might have been messing me around but nope i was wrong!!
Ive just been and picked them up, there dwarfs, but im unsure what type ?
One is white and tan and the other one is brown and white!
So happy they were drinking out of a bowl which was empty and had no toys at all
Ive been to pets at home brought them 2 exercise balls (dwarf size) , a cardboard tube, a tope toy, some loofahs, a seed treat, a flying saucer, some wooden fruit shapes, a bottle and some paper books!
When can i put these in ? Will i upset them if i put the new things in? Ive attached the bottle and put a couple of the wooden fruit shapes in.
When can i clean them out as they smell a bit?
Thanks!!
Here they are!

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
Congrats!
You have two Russian hybrids.
Do be careful with their diet no fruit, or ham mix with fruit in it, no sweet sugary treats etc as they can be prone to diabetes.
I really wouldn't use the exercise balls, they really are quite dangerous for dwarfs & a lot hate them or get scared in them, play pens work well for dwarfs as they can't climb out & are much more fun for ham & owner alike!
I don't see why you can't put the other new things in now, maybe not all at once try a couple of things & see how they react.
Spot clean if you need to but unless the cage is really dirty I would try to give them a chance to settle in a bit before you do any major cleaning.

It's up to you of course but I really wouldn't use the balls at all.

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
They are beautiful colours! I agree with cypher on the exercise balls, there are lots of different opinions on whether exercise balls are okay or shouldn't be used at all and it comes down to personal preference and the hamster itself! When you try them out you could always get them used to them before hand, Dandi doesn't use her ball but I use it to move her around. She happily hops in so it could be a good way to get your hams used to going in and getting comfortable in them before closing them in.

Have they got names?

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
Congratulations on your pair, that's what you wanted, glad you were able to get them. Any names yet? BTW: should let them settle in for a week! Just change water and food only. I don't even talk to mine for the first 2-3 days! But up to you of course? They just need to make sure they feel secure in their new environment.

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
Congratulations! Yes I thought balls weren't recommended for dwarf hamsters as well. I don't think they enjoy it because they are so small and they are at risk of injury with the slits in balls. I think you'd be better buying a playpen
They look lovely. Are they living together? One thing I just wanted to point out to be careful of. On the photos of the hammy in the cage there is a gap where the ladder meets the shelf. I just remember some other hammy getting injured in that same cage with the gap between the ladder and shelf. Might be a good idea to swap the ladder for something else. A bendy bridge ladder maybe.

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
Congratulations on your 2 dwarfs.
Do you have a pet shop near you? I got quite a few sugar free treats from mine.
If they're living together you'll need 2 of everything.

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
Congratulations they are beautiful, I agree with thin lizzie you will need 2 of everything, also I would take the shelf out as it can cause territorial behaviour rather than the balls maybe try a playpen, you can use a dry bathtub with a blanket if you don't have a playpen .
Enjoy your lovely new additions

Re: 2 new hamsters!!
Hi guys! Yesterday was a very eventful day! After bringing them home , i completely left them on there own in my bedroom with no other interaction. At about 5 last night i heard a koud squeak from upstairs, i ran upstairs to find that the white one was trying to jump on the other resulting in the brown one squeaking and running into his bed!
I knew this wasn't right and I spoke to a few members on a facebook group, who recommended seperating them as it could be the start of fighting. Others said to put 2 of everything in the cages and after doing this, i was sat right next to the cage when the white one jumped on the brown one again!
Luckily i had got a spare cage! I seperated them as soon as i could, and neither got injured! Since being seperated they are extremely happier and the brown one has actually come out of its bed, and surprisingly spent hardly any time in there lol!
I spoke to the previous owner who assured me they were both girls, however after going to pets at home and having them double checked by pets at home they assured me they were boys! Personally i do think they are boys!
She also said they had done the same behaviour before and she used to just give them a treat and they would 'shut up'!! Seperating has been the best thing for them and i and them are both glad that i seperated them!
