Default Re-homing Ad. 2 Syrians Together

Thought I'd post this out of curiosity as to if this is a common or reoccurring issue?

I was browsing Gumtree and found an ad advertising x2 Syrians, the picture showing them living together. They are both males so thankfully inbreeding isn't a concern but upon reading further into the ad it sounded like they were clearly being rehome to live together in the same cage.

I messaged the person explaining how syrians can't live together and how it would be unfair to rehome them that way and leave someone with a vet bill after a fight or even worse. Although I was careful to word it so it wouldn't be taken badly as I know how easy it is to offend someone by coming across as the 'know it all' who's telling you your doing it wrong!

The reply was that the pet shop they got them from (jolleyes) told them it was okay and was then told to rather kindly 'do one'

My only concern is for the hamsters, is it even possible they won't fight? Or is it almost certain to end badly?

Will almost certainly end badly. I've seen so many ads with Syrians together and it breaks my heart, sadly a lot of them are mixed sex pairs too. I can't believe that Syrians being solitary still isn't common knowledge outside of the hamster community

Even if they don't fight they will be very stressed living together. Some people won't listen to advice given... no matter how nicely you tell them. What area are they being rehomed? If I can help I will x

Its ridiculous, especially for a pet shop to not know that! Currently seeing if Gumtree allow this sort of sale as it tides in with other rules of not selling animals which are inappropriate to be sold

According to Gumtree there would only be an issue if they were selling two animals of a separate species together. Suggested they amend this as this rule doesn't apply to all animals as its common sense there will be animals that can't be housed together

That is roughly 2 hours away from me. I could take in 1 as I only have room for 1. I would take both if I knew I could rehome 1 of them but I don't know anyone that has any experience with hamsters/wants one. I would have to make a bin cage to house one of them as I only have 1 suitable spare cage. I really want to help them out. Is the cage they are in at the moment suitable for 1 Syrian or is it on the small side? If I can help in anyway I'm sure I can talk my partner into making the trip.

I can't tell from the ad how big the cage is as it's only a section you can see in the picture, but it doesn't look drastically small.

Can I PM you the link? If the forum allows?

It looks a little like a Hamster Heaven with the green path level, but the tray seems to be grey which contradicts it being one as all the trays are blue on them as far as I know

I found the post on the website. They don't seem to show much of the cage. The poor hams look like they want out though. It will be tough for me to get there and back as it will be 4 hours. I can't drive so my partner would have to. I have given him the info. I can't take both so I'm not really sure what to do. I'm trying to think. Is there anywhere we can post and see if someone can help with the situation? I might message the seller myself. Maybe a few people telling them might make them think.

It is a long way for you to go... I can only think of reaching out to other members on here. I could try see if there are any local rescues that are run by people as oppose to organisations near?

Its worth a shot messaging them. I'm sure if multiple people told them the same thing they'd at least begin to doubt that they were okay together and with any luck see we are telling the truth!

Maybe they would let you take one and someone else take the other. You could collect it in a carrier or small cage. Leaving them one in the current cage.

I would be careful re; messaging them again. They have made it very clear that they are not open to advice.

I agree with CMB.
