Default Hamster Photo of the Month of March

Oops please forgive my neglect of starting this month on time and TY Souffle for waking my brain.
DAY 1
Since I have missed 4 days you shall get several Photos in this day.
ST's Hamstery came about when I started raising Syrians in 2000. I had raised Syrians a long time before that when a good friend of my parents owned a small privately owned and operated Pet Store and wanted me to raise hamsters for them which were supplied to me along with a complete set up able to house 10 Females and 2 Males.

However The 1st photo is of me as a teenager with Bellbottom slacks and a cat Fluffy who was trained to not desire Hamsters. Please don't do this with your hamster and cat as unless well trained to not see the rodent as food this would be very dangerous.

I found boys, and a real job and the days of breeding hamsters ended until one day in 1999 at a flea market in Mansfield Ohio I found my love for hamsters return(as well as my desire to rescue helpless Hamsters) My Husband Michael and I saw a horse trough full of about 40 young Syrian hamsters. The seller was obviously out for the money, and was telling any child who came near that there was one girl in the trough and if they could talk their Mommy or Daddy to buy her they would have lots more. I tried to resist the urge but after three more kids I decided to bring the female home so no unknowledged child would get her.

As I reached in to pick her up a Black male just leaped in my arm and ran up to my ear and gave it a kiss. I collected him and placed him back saying I was sorry but I only had a tank and not any place to house him so he had to stay. He answered that with a big leap up to my ear and gave it a kiss. That happened 2 more times and I decided to get him as well.

The female became Specks and she was a Red Eyed Cream Dominant Spot

The Male was named Nibbler because when he was done with handling he would nibble my finger just enough that I knew it was time to put him back

These two had two litters and had I known then about genetics like now I would have doubted I would get a Black Dominant spot but back then it went like this: Black is a dominate color in many other animals so there for the Black would surely dominant the cream. LOL by pure luck Specks proved to carry Black so I got a Black Dominant Spot pup the first breeding.

a female I kept and named Spicks, I also kept a Black male pup I named Nibblet.
Here is Spicks

And Nibblett

Specks lived to 2 years 4 months, and Nibbler was given to a young girl who had a nasty Female who just didn't like kids. One day when I had to go to the Dog wardens to purchase dog tags for my dogs I found a Grandma and her two young grandchildren with a Box and many tears flowed from the Childrens eyes. Curious what they had in the Pet Store Small animal box they showed me a lovely Black Dominant Spot adult male. The crying was because they had come to surrender their pet because their Mother had decided she didn't want a rodent in her home. The dog Warden wouldn't take the Hamster nor would the pet store Grandma bought it from take it back. So Fred came into my life. This Photo was just a few days before he passed away a old man ham of about 2 years old.

Day Two
I decided to breed Spicks to Fred. The thought behind that was a whole litter of Black Dominant Spots. Right, again I was unskilled with Genetics and no PC so no Hamster forum to know not only was this very risky but that any Homozygous for Dominant Spot pups would never happen as it is embro Lethal meaning the pup dies in the womb . Well again the Grace of the Lord shined down and I got a litter of nine healthy pups and one huge shock and surprise. Seems both Fred and Spicks carried for Cinnamon as I got several Dove and Cinnamon pups and HUH how on earth did I get solid pattern pups when both were Spotted? Well if I'd have known then what i know now I would not at all been shocked at solid pups even with spotted parents since both Dominant Spot parents had to be Hetero for the Dominant spot Gene. As for the colors I should have known because Spicks Dam Specks was REC Ds that she would have passed on one gene of her Cinnamon. By luck Fred also carried for Cinnamon which resulted in my two keepers A Dove female named Dovey, and another Surprise with both Short Haired parents producing ONE Long Haired Cinnamon Dominant Spot who I appropriately named Sir Prize.

Both pups quickly became my absolute favorites and Heart hams especially Lovey Dovey
Here is a full coat Sir Prize

and my all time favorite photo of Dovey

Dovey used to love belly rubs and when in heat would lay upside down for minutes just to have her tummy rubbed

Sir Prize gave me two litters and left me at the nice age of 2 years and 1 month, but left me with several Tort daughters which you will meet another day.

Dovey only had 1 litter and I kept back a twin of Dovey with almost as much character but not quite. I named her Yonina, and Yonina went on to produce my first pedigreed sired litter.

Day Three
By now the Tortoiseshell fever was strong in my desires to produce, BUT that required a Yellow or Yellow combination color hamster coming into my life. I went to the big name pet store with the red bouncing ball in it's sign and decided to look at their hamsters. They had one tank labeled as "Honey Bears". In it was the must lovely colored hamster I'd ever seen and it was too gold to be Cream but too cream to be Golden. He was very curious of me so I asked to visit with him. Upon holding him I noted he had a few sparse hairs on his back which were odd being black. With a little more gene knowledge now I knew this was not a BEC hamster but what on earth was he as he was a self pattern so couldn't be Yellow, but his ticking screamed he was Yellow. Enter Pooh Bear into ST's Hamstery. Who ended up a satin cream carrying Melanistic Yellow

With Pooh Bear came a very harsh lesson on how bad it can be to use one male to produce all of the pups of one gene pool. I bred Pooh Bear to Panther who was a solid black Spicks grand daughter. Here is the results of my very first Yellow breeding here at ST's Hamstery

Yes folks that is 15 precious pups and only one pup ended up not satin against all odds as usually it would only be 50% of the litter would be satin.

My keeper was a Satin Black Tort girl named Ripley because her pattern made her look rippled.

Ripley was a fighter and when I fed contaminated with Salmonella Bean Sprouts she was the only one to recover of all the adult hamsters who got sick. However she never was healthy enough to breed and was petted out to a truck driver who loved her as much as if not more then I did. She passed away peacefully in their hands at 22 months old.

However I learned after many more litters by Poohbear that he had a genetic issue with his heart and began getting phone calls from many people who had PB's great grandsons on finding them dead in their nest at just over 8 weeks old. It was always males and always dead in the nest after being active and playing the day before. Being a responsible breeder I had to remove every hamster in my breeding colony which went back to Pooh Bear and find them all Pet homes. This was one of the hardest things for me to do as I had based my whole Hamstery on that one male and his satin Melanistic son Echo.

Day Four I was really ready to toss in the towel and get out of Hamsters when I met two wonderful Breeders who comforted me and praised me for being willing to eliminate my whole breeding hamsters from PB's lines. By now I had been in a Hamster forum and was so upset at what was taking place I was banned from the forum. (If any of you on HC remember that time I am grateful you didn't hold that against me when I joined HC)

Any ways I had decided the only way I would stay in Hamsters was if I could get Pedigreed hamsters from a breeder who had a long reputation of Healthy and long lived hamsters. One gal despite what false sayings about me were being told to any one in or around Ohio decided to risk it and trust their gut instincts. They offered me 3 of their best line Hamsters one was a SH Golden who was unknown if he carried Cream, black,or Cinnamon, But we did know he carried the Rex coat gene. The next was a distant Cousin to the Golden and was a Black LH who may carry for Cinnamon and cream. Like his cousin he carried rex coat. He also may have been Umbrous. The last was a beautiful Umbrous Golden Rex SH female. These Hamsters were to boost my spirits AND to teach me as much as possible about Genetics. You see this wonderful Mentor was coaching me but also allowing me to choose the mates, but before breeding the two chosen mates they would critique my choice mate of the non Yellow lines.

The three pedigreed Hamsters were Christian SH Golden possible Cinnamon, Cream, and Black Carrier definite Rex carrier.

For and idea of his size at just 6 weeks of age.

Tynan LH Black possibly Umbrous,Cinnamon, and Cream Carrier definite Rex carrier.
Tynan when he first arrived here. Full Brother to Hadiya.

And last but far far from least was my big chunky SH Rex Umbrous Golden Gal named Hadiya

With these three hamsters and 3 of my best Females from my own breeding as well as the encouragement of my two great friends. ST's Hamstery began a fresh new start. One which had way high goals to reach for of producing quality Hamsters in any color Tort Banded.

So glad you got a nudge Nancy! I had looked up who was to do this month and have been waiting with much anticipation. It has been a road full of twists and turns for you.
That photo of Ripley is so appealing and Hadiya looks gorgeous.
Can't wait for more!

They are adorable! Like the dominant spot hammie & Ripley is really nice! Glad you had a tame cat when you were younger, the beginning of a hamster breeder!
