I thought the sand was suppose to be coarse? That's why I didn't choose the play sand. It's not really thick, I don't think he'd be able to actually pick up a piece. He doesn't eat his potty litter either. I guess I can always return it and buy the children's play sand anyway.

The quickrete sand is for building use and has high amounts of silicon which made the USDA force quickrete to quit selling their Children's Play sand in tan coloration. If you look for natural color Play sand at Lowes you will not find it any more. You can still find natural color play sand (or it's equivalent) at Garden Centers/Flower nurseries, and at any Pool supply stores. The children's sand found at Walmarts is not sand at all but finely ground up plastic which is not absorbent at all, and no good for hamsters either.

I just bought a 50lb bag and took out the amount I was using and heated it in the oven to dry it and cleanse it.

It's not concrete, you mix it with concrete to make the concrete more tractable. As for color when I washed it I didn't see any come out. It's kind like beach sand.

Children's play sand would be better. My chickens have it for dust bathing and they have eaten it and not had any illness etc.

I haven't used it for hamsters yet though. As the weather gets warmer some supermarkets sell it quite cheap.

I thought all sand had silicone? it just mattered if it was washed down so that it was rounded and less scratchy

Yes I know but it has dangerously high amounts of silica in it and would effect your hamster who will be possibly rolling about it and getting it in its fur and when it cleans it's sanded fur it WILL ingest a small amount of sand each clean.

Our USDA has made it mandatory to remove ALL silica from any sand labeled as Children's Play Sand as the silica has been proven to cause cancer. Problem is it is the very substance which makes sand absorbent, and great packing fun to build sand castles when wet. Silica is also one of the things used in clumping cat litter.

If you like more reading here is a link about the dangers found in silica

I don't know what species of hamster you own but if it's a robo they can get greasy and would need either Chinchilla sand or dust to clean their fur from time to time, usually weekly. Chinchilla sand is recommended over the dust.
