The hemp bedding is good as well, as Cypher says (I was allergic to it unfortunately). I wasn't keen on Aspen - seemed spiky. You can also get Finacard bedding (cardboard). So mixing that with Fitch and hemp might help, although I did find Fitch ok for holding tunnels.
Hi, sorry to piggyback onto this thread, Cypher & Serendipity have mentioned hemp, has anyone tried Aubiose? I'm about to put through my rat rations order & wondering what that & finacard is like. I've used Fitch for years & love it but a couple of our hammies seem to get on better with harder bedding. Any thoughts gratefully received.

ps. I'm asthmatic too & can't cope with wood shavings/straw/hay.

Hello Coldpaws. I use finacard at the bottom of all my cages (fitch on top) is is teeny pieces of cardboard so a bit harder than fitch (a lot harder) but not sharp and nice and absorbent.

Hi flowerfairy, thanks for the info. Is it dusty? When our hams chomp up lots of cardboard (tissue boxes, box packaging like Amazon boxes) that's in their cage either for hidey places, tunnels, or as dividers etc. I find the bits quite dusty & it can trigger my asthma.
I'm guessing this is cos the cardboard isn't designed as bedding whereas finacard is. If it's stronger than fitch & not as dusty as bog-standard cardboard (boom boom) I might give it a go under the fitch like you do.

I used to use aubiose but found it triggered my asthma and hay fever, especially during clean out. I've been using Fitch for about 4 years but will be picking up Finacard at the end of the week (my friend and I share pallets of substrate and Fitch has been difficult to get pallets of recently). My standy-by "argh I've run out and need to get some from the shop" substrate is megazorb. My hams are currently on megazorb as the Finacard didn't arrive in time for my last clean out. I don't find it too bad for my asthma though I'm not a fan of the smell or the dust - perhaps both are less noticeable with fewer hamsters!

I guess we all have different sensitivities, I've never tried aubiose but am fine with hemp while I can barely look at megazorb without having an asthma attack!
I'm sure kyrilliondaemon uses fincard but mixes it with something (fitch maybe, not sure) so they can burrow in it.
I think aubiose is fairly similar to the hemp you can get from zooplus & they do it in large bales if you want to buy quite a lot at once although I do find the Hugro hemp which comes in smaller bags, still quite big but not bales, to be just that bit softer with less chance of sharp bit.

I mix Carefresh, Kaytee Clean and cozy, and all living things bedding. It is colorful and holds an amazing burrow.

Thanks for the info Vectis, cypher & Sm_banks.
cypher, you're right, everyone seems to have quite different opinions on bedding & allergies, I guess it's a matter of trying things out & seeing which kills you less! :P I only use megazorb for one litter tray, mainly as Nugget insists on kicking all her Potty Litt'a granules out of her toilet & megazorb is the only thing she leaves (mostly) intact! :O
Sm_banks, I don't know what All Living Things bedding is like, as it's not a UK brand but it's a name I'm hearing more of lately so probably good quality stuff.

We've got plenty of Fitch to keep us going (20kg seems to last FOREVER, even with 9 furries!) but I ordered 1kg Aubiose hemp & Finacard just to try. .It's only £1 each on ratrations & our hams have such different tastes I'm sure it wont be wasted.
Vectis, would be good to know how you get on with the Finacard.

All living things is like a cardboard-paper hybrid. some people say it is dusty but I have a bad dust allergy and could stick my face in the bag and be fine.

Thanks for the link! Ah it looks similar to Megazorb? But possibly softer? Ahaha, just imagined everyone on here sticking their faces in bedding bags to test sensitivity...the Bedding-In-Face test?

Can't say I've ever stuck my head in the bale of Fitch, despite it being the least irritating bedding for me, I'd probably get quite wheezy shoving my face in it. & the hammies would look at me like I'd lost my last marbles!
