Taming/befriending with my Dwarf Hamster
Hi,
I recently bought 2 Dwarf hamsters on Tuesday with the CritterTrail two level habitat. I let them get use to their environment for 1 or 2 days and then tried putting my hands in them to let them sniff me and that didn't work. They just run around the cage, go on the wheel and go to their petting cage. I did a few time too and my hamster wouldn't come near me. I then put some hamster food on my hand and put my hand in there for a bit and see if they will come to me to sniff my hands or grab on of the food and run away somewhere to eat it.. That didn't work either.. I bought a little treat called strawberry yogurt for Dwarf hamsters and put my hand in there and they did come up to my hand and sniff a little and was curious and then they went back to their wheel, run around the cage and everything.. That's the same with baby carrot i bought today too. I'm just wondering if i should feed my hamster baby carrot that you buy from the supermarket, are they safe for the Dwarf Hamsters? And my Dwarf hamsters are Robos.

Re: Taming/befriending with my Dwarf Hamster
Hi. Sorry I'm responding to your post a little late. Welcome to HC. The first thing to say is, you haven't had your new additions very long so they're still settling in. Try putting some tissue/toilet paper up your sleeve or down your top for a while & then putting it in the cage for them to use as nesting material or just to have fun ripping up. This gets them use to your smell. Robos can be hard to tame as they are so skittish but you just have to go slowly & be consistent. It sounds a bit like they may be baffled as you're trying a different thing each time rather than just letting them get used to you being around. Introduce veg slowly as it can give them tummy troubles to have too much when they're not used to it. My robo loves sunflower seeds so I use those as a treat for him to take.
One other thing is to have a second cage available or make a bin cage. Pairs can be prone to falling out and the cage you have described isn't the ideal setup for pairs - levels can mean one hamster getting territorial. Ideally they should just have one big open space. Also, as you have a pair you should have two of everything in your cage so that means two wheels, two food bowls, two bottles, two houses which have more than one entrance so that one of them doesn't get bullied out by the other. Keep an eye out for squeaking or signs of fighting as it can escalate quickly into something serious & they need to be separated.
Let us know how you get on!
