Default Advice

Hello.
I'm coming here before I post online. I've currently moved in with my boyfriend as we're trying to save to move abroad in the summer. I have two hamsters, Larry a year old and a halfand Winston, 6 months old. I hate that I have to write this but because Larry is an old man now I will be keeping him but have to sell Winston due to lack of space and my future move . What would you say is the correct price for him? I really want to find him the perfect house and ensure that his life will be happy and healthy. He's a spinner so I'll obviously have to put that in the description but who is the ideal home for him? I don't want him to go with children because I know what they're like for just grabbing them. Thanks.

Hi Larrymon. Best of luck with your move abroad. Is Winston a Robo who spins? I remember your posts a wee while back about this but can`t remember who is who! Ideally, you want someone who has hamster experience especially with a spinner who needs understanding. That won`t be easy looking on Gumtree and similar websites. My last robo Fred had this condition and he managed it well. I know what this entails. Sadly though, I can`t take in more hamsters right now as I have room for one only. My friend stays in South Lanarkshire but she has her hands full right now with baby mice from a feeder breeder she rescued the adults from just recently and she has hamsters as well, so she`s full to capacity!

Hopefully a member on here will read this and be close enough to help you out. A spinning robo will be happy living in a single level cage for safety reasons, so if his layout is kept the same, it should be fine and anyone rehoming him should know this.

Keep this thread open and fingers crossed, someone can help. x

If you want to find him a good home with someone who would understand his needs why not post in the forum Hamster rescue & adoption section, there's a chance someone might be able to help rather than using other online sites, or in addition to those sites where you'll have less idea of who may be offering him a home.

Might be worth posting on some of the facebook groups too, Hamsters UK has a large user base and decent moderation

If he didn`t have these special needs then it would have possibly been easier to find him a new home, but it`s not so much his spinning, it`s finding a new owner who can handle his needs and care. Your absolutely right to rule out households with children. Some adults could have issues with his care of they don`t understand it, so it`s crucial that he finds the right person/persons. Had I been better placed right now, I would have given him a home, but I know it`s heart ruling head, even though I hate turning down a needy robo! x

Sorry Larrymom, I totally read your location wrongly! I thought you were in Lanarkshire and your in Lancashire! Sorry about that. Have you had any luck yet with him? x

To answer the question, the money side is difficult. On the one hand it would be better to give him and his cage to someone who can care well for him, for no money. On the other hand, asking a price rules out people who would take a hamster and cage for nothing but not necessarily care for them.

I would think a rescue might be the best place, with no fee for him and his cage.

Sorry for the delay in responses, I've been very busy.

I managed to find him a new home. It was very emotional but I'm okay now. An oldish lady adopted him from me. She has had hamsters in the past and told me she fell instantly in love with the images of him. I sent her information on spinners and she was still on board, which was my biggest fear. I needed her to know about it before hand in detail to see if she could still care for him. She messages me weekly to tell me how he's doing. She's very smitten with him. He's only down the road so I wave as I pass.

That`s really good that you found someone nearby who was able to rehome Winston. Did you advertise him online in the end and this woman then contacted you? If she`s online, she may be interested in joining HC! x
