Frodo Update
I have to get new pics of Frodo to show off, though he's doing super well. He's pretty much tame now, after lots of patience and letting him choose his own pace for becoming friends. We're now at the point that when he's awake and I go near his bin, he'll do the stand-up-hoppy-thing against the sides to get my attention. He's still a little jumpy if being scooped up directly, so I'll often take him out to play by putting his runabout ball in with him. He runs over and hops right in, and has "Vroom-vroom time" for about twenty minutes, then will come out and climb on me, let me hold him, get brushed, and seems to really enjoy the attention. He's never once nipped, and for a little boy who spent the first four months of his life being ignored in a tiny pet store tank, I think he's just doing fabulously.
He's grown since he came home, but he's still relatively small for a male syrian. I think he is pretty well done growing now, and that's perfectly fine with me, of course. I'd love him at at any size!
I've had so many people (not hamster people, of course!) ask me "why on earth do you want another hamster at your age?" Well, phooey on them, as I am thrilled with my little buddy and so very glad we found each other.
I have stopped in occasionally to check in but haven't posted much. I'll try to be better about that!

Re: Frodo Update
Hi, all! It's been a long time since Frodo and I stopped in to say hi. He is my golden banded long-haired Syrian boy, and he's now about a year and three months old.
He's doing really well, though I don't get to see and play with him often any more. He has taken to sleeping till about 2-AM, by which time I'm long asleep, and going back to bed before I get up at 7-AM. He started this when the days started to get shorter in the winter, and is still in that pattern. Occasionally, I will catch him rousing earlier, and whenever that happens he comes out to play in his ball for a while. He's lost a lot of his "tameness" due to my not having a chance to handle him as much. He still is sweet when held, he's never bitten or anything, but he's jumpier than he used to be. We do our best, though, and he's still dearly loved by all.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to gently turn a hamster's sleep cycles around? He is the first I've ever had who sleeps that late into, well, the morning. Most of my hamsters would wake around dusk, and I'd have a chance to hang out with them and play all evening before I went to bed. I've never had such a sleepy-head before.
Yet, hubby (who works evening shift, and gets home around 1:30-am most nights, and so is still awake when Frodo gets up) says that he's active, still spins the wheel energetically, runs all over hoarding his goodies and digging in the substrate, and will come running over to the mesh to say hello whenever he (hubby) stops by the bin to talk to him. So he's fine, he's just seriously nocturnal! LOL
Here's a pic taken the other day. About the only time I see him for any length of time is after I change his cage completely (every other week). He always comes out to make sure I didn't steal anything important <G>, so I grabbed a few pix quick before he went back to bed.

Re: Frodo Update
Oh my, his white ruff looks, for all the world, like a feather boa! He is a beautiful boy. As for turning around his hours, I usually start getting a hammy up an hour earlier each day. Eventually it gets closer to your schedule. I really like it when my Ted E. gets onto a schedule where he gets up between 9 and 11 p.m. My boy also does this thing where he turns his hours over an hour each week until he's gone around the clock. My all time favorite is when he's on a daytime hammy schedule. Then, he's up around 11 am to around 3 pm. Ted E's been like this since I got him. I just have to wait him out until he is at my favorite times. LOL.
