Default What to chew on?

I was wondering if I can give a Granny Smith apple tree twig to Scarlet to chew on if I wash it really good and put it in the freezer in case of mites? BTW, what else can you get for her to chew on?

Apple wood is safe to chew on.
Have you tried whimzees, just about the favourite chew with most hams.

Yeah. Not sure if she would like it though. Thought about getting her the tan colored one. Do your hams like that flavor? BTW, the apple wood is Granny Smith. I have a Granny Smith apple tree in my yard so I could just break of a twig, clean it really good, and give it to her. The thing I am concered about is what about splintering? I don't know if it does splinter, but maybe it will splinter if she chews on it?

Thanks for the idea, but she already has one. Not really a log but it is a edible stick. You can hang it in the cage. She doesn't use it much. Maybe smear peanut butter on it to get her to chew on it?

I'm not sure about apple wood splintering tbh, I've never used it but I know some people do, just check it over regularly & remove it if you're worried.
Different hams seem to like different coloured whimzees, never tasted them lol so I don't know how much the taste differs!

Yeah. Artisans said that her hamsters aren't very fond of the green ones. And she also said greenies are fine. But another person said they can't have greenies. What to listen to?

Mine quite like the green ones! I usually have a selection, you won't really know what your ham likes till you try but they're not that expensive so don't give up if the first one isn't a hit.

I know someone argued against the quality of greenies but quite a few people use them & personally I think they're fine, it's not something they're going to be getting a lot of.

No I mean they make these house log type things and they can eat them and live in them my hammy loved them. I don't know about the peanut butter I would check and make sure it's safe.

If you use any apple twigs, just check there are no sharp sticky out bits that could puncture pouch linings. The only thing with twigs from trees is they can tend to be a bit damp right through and bend rather than break. I think I'd let it dry out for a while in a warm house till it was more like dry wood. It could also need a good scrub first in case there is any lichen or anything growing on it. Our hamster goes crazy for all the antos ones except the white ones - he won't touch those - and prefers the toothbrushes to the crocodiles (I think they are easier to chew round the bristle area!). Cardboard is fine to chew too, so half an egg box or something could be good. You could put a few treats in the dips of the egg box.
