"The hamster definitely won't fit though that gap...."
Just thought I'd post this anecdote as a cautionary/reminder as to the contortionistic abilities of hamsters.
Yesterday Nibble was running around the front room exploring, and poked his head under a small storage cabinet. The fabric of the room is totally hamster proof so I don't mind where he goes, but when I saw him do this I thought "he'll never fit through that gap....". Next thing, I hear "squk squk squk!" Nibble's happy I think to myself, as he is wont to squeak to show he's having fun, then catch sight of his bum disappearing under the cabinet. I could practically hear the Limbo music playing!
Now, he's a really big hamster and I measured the gap out of curiosity and it wasn't quite 3/4 inch. Luckily, he was just extremely disappointed that it led to a solid brick wall, and he had to wait to be rescued because he couldn't get out from under it by himself.
The moral of the story is: "yes they probably can fit through it!"

Oh they absolutely can fit through the gap! They can squish themselves almost flat. Pretty much anything they can get their skull through they can wiggle the rest after. Moral: if you see the head going in grab em quick.
Do a search on you tube for hamster escape and prepare to be amazed.

Yes, the default option is always "yes, yes they can" in answer to any gap/hamster scenarios

Definitely should be added to the 'hamster truths to remember' list! When I first got the Mamble Hubby thought I was being 'a bit paranoid' by getting additional clips for both sides of each door. Watching Spike attempting to squeeze through the side of one of the doors one day when he was over excited about getting out of the cage and almost succeeding since I had just taken the clips off was enough to convince both of us I was being prudent not paranoid!

Doesn't surprise me when I read that mice can get through anything bigger than a 7mm gap! Naughty nibble! If the width of space is there, the height is no object lol!
