Missing my Nutmeg too much.
2 days ago I ordered food in. One of the things was this wonderful fruit salad...chunks of watermelon, mango, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, blueberries, strawberries and seedless grapes. Another thing was a plain salad with no dressing, tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, and romaine lettuce. It popped into my mind right away that Nutmeg was going to love it. Uhmmm, no, she's not here anymore. Then today I ordered a romaine, spinach, cucumber and tomato salad and, again, my first thought was...Nutmeg.
I didn't have the heart to get another hammy after Ted E. Bear, and it was even harder after Almond died. I had no idea how old Nutmeg was, since she was a rescue and an adult when I brought her home.
So, now I have all these empty cages and when I walk into the bedroom my eyes automatically look over for Nutmeg. It is so amazing how much they were a part of my everyday life.
I will be going to my sister's next weekend...my nephew is a major superstar in his town playing football and I want to see him play. The kid just started High School and he's so good the coaches have been waiting impatiently for him to get to High School. He went right into Varsity, which is unusual for a Freshman. He's blowing everyone's mind and it's only been 3 games. He's been in the papers for the last 2 years. I'm hoping to see him some day on TV in College Football. To top it all off, the kid has a 103 average in all his classes, and he's got all honors classes. He tells my sister when she wanted to know how he got 103 in his tests..."Oh, Ma, I do the extra credit questions too". Gotta love him.
So, I have to get there before the weather turns bad, he'd never forgive me if I don't get to at least one of his home games. I am planning on going to the rescue when I get back. I just really want a hammy in the house. I'm thinking of 1 Syrian and 2 dwarfies...maybe a Robo. Possibly a Chinese hammy. I'm open to whatever happens since I have the room for 3-4 hammies, even if they all need their own cage.
Gonna be a long week. *sigh*

Re: Missing my Nutmeg too much.
I'm so sorry DrK, I know just what you're going through, it's so hard when they've gone & you see all the things around you that they were going to enjoy & it just keeps hitting you again that they aren't there to enjoy them any more.
Even still having two hams the empty cage sitting there really makes my heart ache so I can imagine how you must feel now that Nutmeg has gone.
It does sound as though it really is time, after this week is over that is, for you to find some hams that would just be so happy to come home with you & make good use of those cages.
I hope it won't be too long before you have the comfort of little fluffs once again.

Re: Missing my Nutmeg too much.
Hi Drk, I was so sorry when I read you lost Nutmeg. It must be so hard not having the hams around so I'm glad you feel ready to go and see who needs a home. I'm sure when you get to the shelter, they'll choose you.
And what an exciting week, it sounds like your nephew is doing you all proud. Not just because he's doing so well but because he's putting the effort in. Do you have far to travel?

Re: Missing my Nutmeg too much.
Sounds like a good plan! Empty cages not good for the heart. A week-end of fun and distraction at your sisters and then ham shopping! I am sure the right hams will find you. Maybe two rescues and a baby? It's good to rescue them but it's nice to have one for its whole life as well and bring it up (a baby ham that is).

I think some new little ones will help heal your heart DrK. The ones who pass to the bridge have already made the space for the ones who need you. They will be lucky little hams for sure xx

Re: Missing my Nutmeg too much.
Oh DrK, I've just posted on the other thread, again I'm so sorry about Nutmeg and hope you are ok. They really do have such an impact on our hearts don't they.
Am sure any new additions will be very lucky hams with you, Yoda and the cats!
Lovely to hear your nephew doing so well, you and your family must be so proud. Hope you enjoy your time with them.
Take care and we are all thinking about you x

Re: Missing my Nutmeg too much.
I feel you DrK as 2 of my elder robos also passed recently. It's hard not to feel sad when you see their empty cages and when you do a roll call and they all come up towards the door. Every hammie has their own quirks and personalities that are hard to forget. Losing them is heartbreaking but it's also a chance to maybe let a hammie in need of a forever home find you.
I hope you find the lucky hams after your holiday with your family

Re: Missing my Nutmeg too much.
DrK, it sounds as though your nephew is a young man to be really proud of. Err would you mind a little bit of transatlantic education. Just started high school- makes him 12?? Straight into varsity means...is this an American football team at school for older kids? Football this side of the pond means soccer and I guess the coaches would not be so excited about young talent in soccer! Hope he has a good game and auntie must be there.
After that excitement it is time for you and hammies again. Thrilled you are ready to open your heart and home to new ones. Can you phone your favourite rescue and find out the possibilities? All HC will be impatient to hear your happy news. Can't wait to see who steals such a special hammy heart! Good luck.
