Oh it's so lovely to read about you getting to know your new baby hammy it's certainly not boring! Sounds like you have the makings of a brilliant hamster there.

I think you're right to think about getting a baby as a pet for a young child, although of course there are often babies in rescue too, but older animals sometimes need a little more work to bring them out of their shell, may not trust humans etc and probably better for an adult/older child as they would have more patience and realise that it's not that the hammy hates them but it's scared! Wheras babies, especially those not from pet shops that have been handled, tend to be much easier to tame, I think anyway.

Lol, I think Chico would be a brilliant name, although of course it is Jordan's hamster - it's great that you're taking such an interest as a parent though, so many parents buy their children pets and leave them to it.

Let us know when he has a name!

I would say it does depend a lot on the rescue. All my older hamsters are so silly tame they are perfect for children's pets, I wouldn't let a shy introverted hamster go to a child and probably not at all until we had helped it come out of its shell. New babies are cute but they really are like slippery soap and can get spooked and bite through fear, not maliciousness but often that one bite is all it takes for a child to then lose interest and we all know that young hamsters can really be stroppy teenagers at times. I normally recommend that a young child should not have a hamster of under 3 months old, by this age they are starting to settle down, are a lot more forgiving of clumsy hands, and less inclined to succumb to stress related illness, especially if well socialised in the rescue. If the choice is pet shop hamster or older rescue it would have to be older rescue every time for more than just the simple fact that these hamsters deserve a second chance, but because they are actually more suitable.

'CHICO'

Was HammyJ for an hour, won't drive you mad with the other names his had today, Chico I put that name forward it suits him, so surprised Jordan even liked it lol

But think hammy eating the chicken again tonight did it, 'CHICO' ITS CHICKEN TIME! lol you will only understand if you watch the XFactor...

I said to Jord before he got Hammy erm I mean Chico as its an animal he's having he will have to be taught, helped and supervised in looking after him for quite awhile as his not a toy, esp being a baby hammy.

Think Jordan is glad of the help as he is worried he could hurt him.

So we are sorted, and Happy with House & Hammy

I have another question regarding Chicco, but will look for the right thread on here.

Thanks again for all your help, and making it so much fun. xxx
