Default What kind of holiday hamster care to choose?

Have just booked us on our holidays for next year! Whoop! So now i can spend the next 7 months worrying about finding someone to look after Nibble!

I don't know anyone with hamsters. None of my family would be confident looking after/handling him. I was going to ask my friend but he met Nibble at the weekend and was scared of him because he's so big!

So I could find one of those holiday pet care people who could come in and check him every day, even twice a day, so he could stay in his own cage and stick to his own routine. Thing is, none of them seem to have any hamster experience, they do dogs and cats and small animals are a sideline.

Or I could take him back to the pet shop we got him from, they do small animal boarding there. Obviously they know how to care for hamsters, but he would have to move into one of their cages for a week, the cages they provide are much smaller than his (small enough I don't think his wheel would fit in).

What do you think?

Where abouts do you live? There is a thread on here with members volunteering Holiday Hamster Sitters List

I went away recently and I looked at everything, I don't think I'd use the visiting ones as they seem to charge quite a lot (where I was it seemed about £7-10 a day) and probably don't know that much about smallies. Small animal boarding I found for £3 a day using this website Find Small Animal Boarding in the UK - View Rabbit, Guinea Pig and Other Small Pet Boarding Services. In the end I found someone through my uni and paid them the same as the boarding places were charging.

I had a look at he holiday hamster sitters list, there wasn't anything remotely near me.

Maybe I'll ask in the pet shop if there's someone local, maybe one of the staff would like to earn a few £! I don't mind paying a bit for proper care, Ive factored it into the cost of the holiday. I just want him looked after well!
