Default Elsa update. [New cage!]

Hi guys!

So Elsa has been with us for over a month now and we finally got her a new cage. It's so big - 80 X 50 - and there is plenty of room for a sand bath, two water bottles, two houses and various toys including a new saucer disk and a hammock.

She seems to like the new cage but dislikes the saucer and never looks near it. She also seems to dislike the hammock.

I am finding that she still doesn't like being handled and won't let us pick her up. Scuffing her is very hard and she rubs her teeth together in a threatening way so I generally leave her alone. She does, however, like being petted sometimes which is one thing.

I hope over time she will be able to trust us more and let us handle her. If anyone has any tips it would be great. She has so far injured my fiance twice and me three or four times with those teeth of hers so needless to say we have grown a bit weary.

We have been hand feeding her bits of treats and fruit and she takes it from us no problem. We also have our hands in the cage on numerous occasions through out the day so she should know our smell.

Use the tissue trick, the both of you neef to stuff tissues up your sleeves for a couple of hours and then place in her cage, leave her alone to sniff them, even better if she uses them for her bedding. You've not had her long and you've already changed her cage. She needs to remark her scent in her new cage and make it hers, this change has probably stressed her out so give her a good couple of weeks to settle in. Whatever you do, don't clean out this new cage for at least 3 weeks, do a daily spot check and remove any spoiled substrate.
Continue to talk to her, encourage and praise her each time she comes near you.

Hi guys! Thanks for the replies and I will get pictures soon.

She seems to have a bit of sticky eye. Because we can't handle her it we haven't been able to help her - last time we tried she bit both of us. So we have just been leaving it and letting her fix it herself. There doesn't seem to be any unusual colour or discharge - is it okay that we just leave it? I was going to take her to the vet but thought it silly because it's just sticky eye.

Hi Nyxietrixx,

I'm sure you'll get other opinions, but my hamster had a bit of sticky eye early on, and it did clear by itself. I would just keep an eye on it (no pun intended...)

Thanks I'm not really sure what to do about her - she is certainly a diva an HATES being annoyed and handled unless it's on her terms. It happens a lot but it always goes away with some grooming.

I was all ready to take my hamster to the vet when it happened, but since it passed on it's own, i decided to wait. I haven't seen it since. I hope all goes well for her.

Next time I notice her with her eye closed I'll take a photo and post it to see what you all think. But there doesn't appear to be any pus so I am assuming it's just sleep. It disappears and the eye opens right back up again by the time she is ready for bed again. The eye looks normal, but sometimes looks a bit wet from where she has been cleaning it. I'm going to nip into where I bought her and ask for advice from them to see what they think.

I know if my hams had a sticky eye, I would give them an hour to fix themselves or I would get some lukewarm water and cotton wool.
I wouldn't let Elsa have it all day, next time she has it, you need to sort it right away, invest in heavy duty household rubber gloves to hold her and to prevent you being bitten.
Fingers crossed, the tissue trick bonding will help, keep at it.

It only literally lasts for half an hour, hour tops after she gets up each time. I have her in for a vets appointment on Thursday morning so if there is anything severely wrong they'll sort it. Other than that she is happy as larry - up all night on her wheel and sand bath, sleeping all day and pokes her head out to complain about us being nosey. The tissue trick will commence once I get non scented tissues!

Cheers and, as I said, I will provide pictures of her cage!
